Welcome to ✨ One to Watch Wednesday ✨ and the first #O2WW of Pride 2024 🏳️🌈 This week, I’m thrilled to feature inclusive+, a #startup doing incredible work to improve the #healthcare experience for #lgbtq people. The Problem 🚨 Compared to non-LGBTQ+ adults, LGBTQ+ folks are twice as likely to experience a negative interaction with a #healthcareprovider (Montero, et al., 2024). 🚨 Even providers who identify as “LGBTQ+ friendly” carry implicit #biases that influence their interactions with #queer patients. These include the incorrect assumption that all patients are heterosexual, cisgender, and non-intersex by default (McGlynn, et al, 2020). 🚨 At least 30% of seriously ill LGBTQ+ patients and their partners report that their providers were unaware of health needs specific to the queer community (Stein, et al., 2023). 🚨 35% report that their providers were insensitive to them based on their queer identity. Approximately 20% report that their providers disregarded their treatment decisions (Stein, et al., 2023). 🚨 Black and Hispanic LGBTQ+ people are 2-4x more likely than White queer folks to report discrimination (Stein, et al., 2023). The Solution: 💪🏿 inclusive+ is building a digital directory of vetted, culturally competent, queer-friendly providers. 💪🏼 inclusive+ offers engaging #continuingeducation to help providers fill the gaps left by traditional medical training. They help providers stay up-to-date on the latest developments in #lgbtqhealth. 💪🏽 The inclusive+ team thoroughly vets every provider in their directory via quizzes and interviews. This ensures that all providers in their directory have the #culturalcompetency and knowledge to address the unique needs of queer patients. 💪🏻 LGBTQ+ folks can use Inclusive+ to find primary care and #mentalhealth providers they can trust. 💪🏾 inclusive+ plans to launch initially to patients in and around Chicago, IL, but they aim to expand their services nationwide as they build a larger network of providers. I’m thrilled to see more solutions emerging to address the healthcare needs of queer folks and build a kinder, more inclusive experience for all!
