Final wrap on the Golden Shovel. One of the unique requirements devised by the ingenious Eric Fisher is that each team is coached by an industry volunteer - classroom teachers have to sit nervously on the sideline. It's great exposure/networking for kids and potential employers. The 2024 Golden Shovel Competition was a tremendous success for both students and the industry! The day began with a job prep phase where students, alongside industry coaches, showcased their skills in surveying, staking, and planning.    By afternoon, they were operating skid steers, building dirt pads for judging. Brent Swonger started his career journey in concrete construction after graduating from Purdue University with a building construction management degree in 2008 and moved to C-Tech Corporation, Inc. in March 2011 as a project engineer and safety manager. Swonger’s field exposure gave him the experience he needed to understand C-Tech’s scope and schedule. Over the years, he has performed various roles, including project manager and operations manager. Currently Swonger leads the company’s estimating and business development efforts. A resident of Shelbyville, along with his wife, three daughters and puppy, Swonger's hobbies include exercising, spending time outdoors, cooking on his Big Green Egg grill and spending time with family and friends. He is actively involved in his local church and community organizations and is looking forward to becoming more involved in industry partner groups.

Skills are being put to the test at the Golden Shovel as students get hands-on experience with tools and heavy equipment while being coached by contractors in a real-world construction challenge.
