Industrial Microbes is honored to receive a Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program award. We applaud the DoD's dedication to advancing bioindustrial manufacturing. We are preparing to establish a commercial-scale facility to convert ethanol feedstock into acrylic acid, a versatile component used in coatings, adhesives, sealants, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, and wound dressings. This initiative aligns with our mission to innovate and scale sustainable biomanufacturing solutions. Industrial Microbes: We turn greenhouse gases into net-zero materials.
About us
iMicrobes is a synthetic biology company on a mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable materials. We have developed a bio-manufacturing process that turns greenhouse gases (GHG) like methane into a wide range of net-zero chemicals, based on our patented microorganisms. We are a team of techno-optimists, backed by Y Combinator and are committed to fueling the circular economy through innovation and industrial partnerships. If you are a chemical company interested in reducing your carbon emissions, let’s talk! www.imicrobes.com

As we reflect on 2023, our founder Derek Greenfield shared learnings on scale-up in industrial biotech.
The Alternative Fuels & Chemicals Coalition conference pushed biotech companies to share their challenges and learnings. That is why I was delighted to join a panel organized by Jim Barber. The other speakers John R. Shaw, Eric Steen, Darcy Prather, and Kristian Gubsch shared their learnings on scaling sustainable industrial biotech processes; here are some of my favorite takeaways: -The focus needs to be on solutions for customers, not on ingredients. -As you scale up a process, keep asking: how is it going to fail? And design your process to address potential failure modes. -Don’t just compete with existing petro ingredients, find where your ingredient has unique properties that solve customer problems. -Get to a scale where customers can test your product as quickly as possible -Don’t give samples away for free. Asking customers to pay will generate useful discussions. And if you're a strain engineer or analytical scientist, iMicrobes is hiring!

McKinsey & Company's recent article on "Sustainable Feedstocks" highlights several key points on the road to a circular economy. 1 - We need to use new feedstocks to get the chemical industry to net zero. The article highlights biomass and methanol/ethanol (made from CO2), and we at iMicrobes also see a major role for biomethane. Biomethane comes from all sorts of waste products and may be lower cost than CO2-to-X technologies. 2 - Cost and true carbon footprint analysis must be accurately determined. 3 - Chemical companies must consider the timing mismatch between the needs of their customers (e.g. consumer-facing brands who want net-zero products now) and what will be available from their suppliers (e.g. oil companies who have promised net-zero products by, say, 2050). This gap is an opportunity for innovative companies to emerge -- connecting sustainable feedstocks to green products that consumers want to buy. New technologies that can deliver net-zero chemicals at competitive prices will establish a dominant market position before the oil companies can decarbonize their operations. Thanks to Tom Brennan and team for contributing to this ongoing and important conversation. Check out our blog for a piece I wrote a few months ago on "Feedstocks of the Circular Economy".
