Since launching IPCG earlier this year, many have been asked about the name and why we chose it. Each member of the fractional leadership team at IPCG has a great story of their journey through the industry and each one is as individual as they are. I was lucky to have started my career in substance use testing after joining a company started by an industry legend and founder - Dr. Donald Ian Macdonald. I was the 13th person hired and started on the third anniversary of the company. Dr. Mac, or Ian as many knew him, took the time to teach us the industry from every angle and made us understand why drug testing benefitted employers and employees alike. The industry was formed with the recognition that substance use can lead to abuse and that any use at work can negatively impact the productivity, profitability and safety of a workplace. He taught us that recovery is a cornerstone of an effective workplace wellness program and benefits all. Unfortunately, that message was lost over the years and workplace testing became more punitive with an emphasis on weeding people out (pun intended) rather than retention, safety, and support. Cannabis is changing that. It is time to learn how and why drug testing is changing - not just a recitation of the new laws or the writing of a new policy but the rethinking of the strategy that leading organizations must employ. The tremendous outreach from the launch of IPCG reinforced that innovation is being sought after and that leaders are championing change.
