EVENT: On the heels of an adverse decision in the landmark #DOJ v. #Google search #antitrust case, Google again finds itself in court against the DOJ. Join ITIF on October 30 from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM EDT for a virtual panel #discussion with experts exploring the merits and implications of the DOJ v. Google ad tech case. #Register for the webinar: https://lnkd.in/eA7j8hY7 Speakers: - Alden Abbott, Mercatus Center at George Mason University - Joseph V. Coniglio, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (moderator) - Megan Gray, GrayMatters Law & Policy - Adam Kovacevich, Chamber of Progress - Salil Mehra, Temple University - James E. Beasley School of Law Learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/eA7j8hY7 Background: In a highly technical and vigorous trial, the DOJ argued that Google has a #monopoly in three specific #adtech markets: 1) the ad exchange market with the company’s AdX product, 2) the ad server market with Google’s Double Click for Publishers (DFP) offering, and 3) the ad network market with its Google Ads tool. The DOJ contended that Google maintained its monopoly power through a wide ranging course of conduct, including refusals to deal, predatory product design, and anticompetitive #mergers. In addition to offering procompetitive justifications for its behavior, Google took issue with the DOJ’s market definition and claims that it is an ad tech monopoly, as well as put forward evidence to establish the weaknesses of the DOJ’s theories of harm. During this webinar, experts will discuss who is likely to prevail, what any potential remedy would look like, and how this ad tech case fits in with not just the Google search case but the other ongoing antitrust actions against “Big Tech.” #techpolicy #antitrust #webinar #liveevent

EVENT: On Thursday, October 24 at 12:00 PM EDT, join us for a #live panel #discussion exploring how anti-tech conservatives would weaponize the #government against #technology, the legitimacy of conservatives' anti-tech arguments, and the implications of their proposals for society. Learn more and register now for this #webinar: https://lnkd.in/gZx9E6Th Speakers: - Jennifer Huddleston, Cato Institute - Ash Johnson, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (moderator) - Jeff Westling, American Action Forum - Josh Withrow, R Street Institute Register for the discussion: https://lnkd.in/gZx9E6Th Background: The recent backlash against "Big Tech" has come from both sides of the aisle, with the #conservative anti-tech sentiment showing up in state #laws governing #socialmedia in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and more, as well as in #Project2025, the Heritage Foundation's blueprint for the future of conservative policy. While advocating for small government and a hands-off #regulatory approach in many other areas, anti-tech conservatives also argue for breaking up "Big Tech," banning #TikTok, and scrapping Section 230, relying on many of the same arguments that anti-tech liberals use: tech is addictive, harmful to children, detrimental to free speech and privacy, and responsible for bias and political division.

The EU’s trade surplus with America is more than $200 billion. Yet it targets U.S. firms with a raft of discriminatory regulations, purchasing policies, and protectionist measures that both extract revenue from and reduce revenue to U.S. industries. Left unchecked, Europe’s approach provides a protectionist model for other countries and regions to emulate, which would fragment the global digital economy into national and regional “walled gardens.” To move forward into a new era of deeper transatlantic trade integration, America must first demand a level playing field. Congress and the next administration should review U.S. trade tools and develop new reciprocal measures to counter the EU’s digital protectionism and tech sovereignty. 🔗 Read Rob Atkinson's full report: https://lnkd.in/gb78nBma

On Thursday, October 10 at 10:00AM-11:00AM, join ITIF’s Schumpeter Project on Competition Policy for a lively and insightful #discussion featuring leading #experts from #Europe. Learn more and #register now: https://lnkd.in/eZ3enrEd Speakers: - Alberto Bacchiega, European Commission - Lilla Nóra Kiss, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation - Cristoforo Osti, Chiomenti - Alexandre de Streel, Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE) - Reinhilde Veugelers, Bruegel - Improving economic policy Learn more and register now: https://lnkd.in/eZ3enrEd Background: While the DMA is designed to level the #digital playing field and enhance #competition, the adoption of national implementation #laws by member states risks undermining these objectives, potentially leading to #regulatory fragmentation. This timely discussion will explore the impact of the DMA’s enforcement and the varied national actions on businesses, #innovation, and consumer choice across Europe. The panel will also address broader #competition #policy issues, including insights from Mario Draghi’s report on European #competitiveness.
