Today, on World Poetry Day, we celebrate the profound impact of poetry, not only as a form of artistic expression but as a mirror to our shared human experiences. In a new article for The Thread, we highlight the incredible work of New America Fellows and acclaimed poets Sarah Kay and Clint Smith and their reflections on the craft, their inspiration, and the personal and societal power of poetry. ✒️ https://lnkd.in/eXPaM2vi

We are dedicated to renewing the promise of America.
About us
We are dedicated to renewing the promise of America by continuing the quest to realize our nation’s highest ideals. New America is a new kind of think-and-action tank: a civic platform that connects a research institute, technology lab, solutions network, media hub, and public forum. We generate big, bold ideas as templates for change. We design and advance evidence-based public policies. We surface, share, and scale locally generated and tested solutions to public problems through a national and global network of public, private, and civic partners. We develop legal, political, and technological tools to build democratic capacity and enable solutions to grow and spread. We tell stories about what is happening and what is possible, to give Americans a window into what we are capable of achieving together and a vision of what a renewed America could and should be.

As the saying goes “its takes a village to raise a child,” but how can that village help if it doesn’t know who you are or what you need? This is the story of many parenting students in the U.S. higher education system. Despite making up over 3 million of the student population, parenting students are often overlooked in higher education policies. In my new piece out on New America’s The Thread, I share one way Congress can support this population and allow colleges to become the village parenting students need to raise their children and succeed in school. Two interactive non-fiction projects I designed for the Better Life Lab at New America went live this week! 1. something else came up — A choice-based interactive experience highlighting the denial of agency and how it traps people in poverty. Based on the true story of Kiarica Schields, a single mother profiled by my colleague Brigid Schulte, this was an incredible opportunity to dial back into the work I was doing in grad school, exploring the relationship between interactive media, restricted choices, and "empathy." You can try it out or read more about the project and the design choices here: https://lnkd.in/eWVkjzWs 2. Why Cash Matters — A "scrollytelling" photo story exploring how Alexandria, VA's guaranteed basic income pilot became a lifeline to Glynnis Thompson and her family after her cancer diagnosis. It was great to get back into editorial photography with this one as well! https://lnkd.in/eTxNMs6G Both of these products were part of a much bigger project on the impact of early pandemic-era aid programs on families living on low incomes. You can learn more about that project and what families need to thrive at https://lnkd.in/eCP6TjUt.
