A few months ago I was watching my wife knit a beautiful sweater and a question spontaneously emerged in my mind: "Could we 3D print a knitted pattern, to avoid knitting it?". I posed this question to our incredible team and ... the answer is YES!!". Take a look at this video: the feeling of this part in your hands is incredible. Naturally, more questions now arise. Why should we want to 3D print a knitted pattern? Perhaps we could create un-knittable structures with interesting properties? Mathematicians and product designers of the world: please let us know if this would be of interest and we would be happy to print samples for you. Also, what should we name these structures? John T. Chen, one of our investors, suggests "Metatextiles" ... an awesome name! The yarn-level file was downloaded from Prof. Cem Yuskel at the University of Utah (https://lnkd.in/eQ8Pxr7m). Thank you Desai Chen, Qiaodong Cui, Ph.D. and Nico Polcaro for this awesome work! #topology#knitting#mathematics#manufacturing#metatextiles
Thank you to Design News for the great overview in your publication.
Inkbit’s novel approach to 3D printing relies on its proprietary Vision-Controlled Jetting (VCJ) technology. This approach enables the creation of multimaterial, complex structures, including elastomeric and foam components, challenging for conventional 3D printing methods.
