Texas Tech University Office of Research & Innovation's Innovation Hub has long been a beacon for cutting-edge research and the entrepreneurial spirit, nurturing a diverse array of startups poised to revolutionize their respective fields. Prioritizing company culture in a remote-first environment is like trying to high-five your friend through the phone: The intention is there, but the execution is difficult. The lack of in-person interaction makes casual connections like happy hours or spontaneous chats rare. Plus, not everyone is comfortable or active on platforms like Slack, LinkedIn, or Facebook, so digital engagement can vary a lot. But we have a few strategies we use at Innosphere Ventures to keep our culture immersive and our relationships strong. We supplement our face time as much as we can by hosting online workshops, lunch and learns, and fireside chats to keep everyone engaged and moving forward. We also use Slack to share news and updates, tagging individuals to keep the conversation going. But our virtual Mastermind Sessions are where we see the most significant community-building. I’ve written another post about the details of what goes on in these meetings, but they’re essentially “CEO training” groups meant to build trust and camaraderie through practical skills training and relationship building. These sessions consistently get the highest ratings in our program, showing how important they are for building a supportive community. In fact, many members stay connected to chat online long after the official sessions are over. We’re still learning and adapting to what works best for the majority of our team on a given day, but these steps help us create a vibrant culture despite the distance. Technology is certainly invaluable in helping us bridge the physical gaps, but the basis of a strong work culture are strong personalities and connections - and we’ve got those in spades.
