VS1: Redefining the Curtain Wall

About us

Innovation Glass LLC VS1 {Patent granted in 2014} is the first revolutionary step in the aluminum curtain wall and window design since the 1950s. Its technical attributes respond to modern requirements of sustainability, exterior shading, solar energy systems and intelligent building skins that breathe by interfacing with building control systems. The VS1 system uses a blade-shaped mullion and cast aluminum fittings to support insulated or monolithic glass. This simple kit of parts offers designers an unprecedented level of flexibility while eliminating transoms and hardware from projecting into the vision plane. The refinement of system components is inspired by a Miesian approach to glass detailing-elimination of horizontals, all glass corners, zero sight line windows and point supported glass combine to allow the glass wall to be expressed in its purest form. The innovations of the VS1 glazing system have redefined the glass curtain wall.

The VS1 system was used as the exterior glass facade for this extraordinary building. The geometry of the glass surface is one of the most complex in the world but was readily solved by the VS1 system. Multiple fold lines, planar transitions, sloping walls, and angular variations with almost no 90-degree angles had to be accommodated coupled with span variations between 10ft and 28ft; various depth mullions were utilized, ranging from 5” to 10” deep. A dramatic entrance canopy folds in front of the inner wall at the east end of the building. A-framed end walls create “glass crystals,” visually calling out to the gothic neighbors of this architectural masterpiece. One of the strongest attributes of the VS1 System is that it inherently improves the thermal efficiency of a facade purely by the way it's designed. The performance is improved mainly by separating the glass from the mullion face and eliminating horizontal framing. This drastically decreases the thermal heat transfer through the building skin compared to conventional systems which have bulkier profiles directly contacting the glass and horizontal framing members. With the VS1 standard kit of parts, thermal bridging is significantly reduced, improving performance. One can achieve an even higher level of thermal efficiency with a dual facade. While one might expect a lot of framing with two curtain walls, VS1 maintains a high level of transparency. Projects utilizing dual facades can be seen below. A dynamically shaped new building was constructed to house skyboxes and provide additional spectator seating for this existing stadium. The building's curved geometry called for a cladding system that responded to the transitional nature of the resulting surface geometry. VS1 was selected because of its ability to achieve such complex facade solutions within the context of its standard kit of system parts. An outward tilting parallelogram glass geometry with exterior vertical highlighting fins defined the wall problem. VS1 was the solution. The system also accommodated the integration of perforated metal panels in a screen wall on one end of the building at an exterior staircase. This exterior metal building envelope seamlessly transitioned into an enclosed glass-walled area, solving a difficult detailing challenge. Whether or not a design team is familiar with the VS1 system, the concept of an external decorative cap has often been a part of accentuating a building skin. Because VS1 is a barrier system with a silicone weather-sealed flush joint exterior, the question sometimes arises: can VS1 support and provide external decorative caps? The answer is yes! VS1's standard fitting detail can easily be adjusted to incorporate various attachment strategies for caps of many shapes and sizes. These caps require a new extrusion, so any drawn custom profile can be supplied. You may notice in these images that the VS1 mullion profile can also be customized. VS1 is uniquely suited to accommodate the long spans and jumbo glass sizes of airport projects at excellent value. Economies of scale associated with large terminal buildings enable the VS1 system to achieve highly competitive prices while still offering the sleek, minimalist aesthetic of a 21st-century airport. Most recently, the VS1 system resulted in a 30% cost savings against a custom steel façade design. -The VS1 technology is well suited to accommodate the high wind loads standard at airports and has passed the ASTM E 1886/1996 certification test for small and large missile impact. -VS1 is an ideal choice to acoustically isolate terminals from the sound of airplanes taking off and landing. The offset point-supported design of VS1 and its heavy wall thickness, coupled with acoustically rated glass, allow for less sound transmission than conventional façade systems. -VS1 has now been selected for seven airport projects in the United States, with more in the pipeline. The application of VS1 in these projects has elevated the architecture of the buildings while advancing the technology of the facade industry. 1/ George Bush Intercontinental Airport Terminal B 2/ Mobile International Airport 3/ O'Hare International Airport Terminal 5 Expansion 4/ Fort Wayne Airport View more exciting projects in our Project Gallery: https://bit.ly/3X0nCIC

VS1 achieves another milestone by successfully completing and passing WIND ZONE 4 criteria testing for its ASTM E1886 / E1996 small / large missile impact certification. The system is now proven to withstand the most stringent wind loads a project can have. This fulfills many requirements for scopes at airport terminals as well as coastal projects in hurricane environments. Please inquire to Innovation Glass for a full copy of the test report and details.
