InspiriTec hosted Pennsylvania State Rep. Tarik Khan this week at our Philadelphia office. We teamed up with UniqueSource Products & Services to show Rep. Khan how social enterprises in the UniqueSource network are benefiting the economy, and the Commonwealth overall, by employing Pennsylvanians with disabilities in competitive employment. Rep. Khan met with our colleagues doing inspiring work in Philadelphia, like Shelley Baucom of our Medical Marijuana Project Team Helpdesk (top) and Michael Carroll of our Marketing team (bottom). Before joining InspiriTec in 2014, 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐝 was unemployed for five years after becoming paralyzed at age 19 from a gunshot. In the decade since, John has flourished into a leader in the customer service profession and in advocating for people with disabilities! John has represented InspiriTec at disability employment advocacy events, where he has spoken with elected officials about the challenges people with disabilities face in securing employment. John also mentors people who are newly-disabled due to gun violence and spinal cord injuries, through the Peer Mentor Program at Magee Rehabilitation in Philadelphia. “𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘢𝘥𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘫𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥,” John says. InspiriTec’s NASA Program Manager, Kathy Linn, was on the ground helping to support this year’s “Take Our Children to Work Day” at the Stennis Space Center. Approximately 125 kids enjoyed a site tour, a career panel, demonstrations and exhibitions, pizza and door prizes. They left with new friends, great memories…and InspiriTec frisbees! InspiriTec proudly participated in the Independence Dragon Boat Regatta for the fourth consecutive year! Over 100 boats competed in the regatta, which is run by the U.S. national Dragon Boat team. Our boat included paddlers with disabilities, and showed great teamwork and effort in all three races. We dedicated this year's race to our colleague Jay Marable, who lost his life last year. Our shirts featured a dedication to Jay, and before our first race, we laid flowers at Jay's memorial by the river. It was a beautiful day to spend with our colleagues and their families.
