About us

The Institute for Applied Ecology is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1999 with a mission to conserve native species and habitats. Our vision is for people and wildlands to interact positively and meet environmental challenges with research-based techniques and hands-on community support. Our 50+ full-time staff manage many restoration sites in Oregon and the Southwestern United States, have planted thousands of native plants, and engage youth as well as adults and juveniles in custody with ecology lessons. Our programs have accomplished much for our mission to restore ecosystems (Habitat Restoration Program, Native Plant Materials), connect people with nature (Ecological Education Program), and research conservation methods (Conservation Research Program, Estuary Technical Group).

  • It's almost here! We are very excited to be partnering with Common Fields Food Truck Pod and Taproom this year for IAE's 12th annual Invasive Species Cook-off, our annual fundraiser to support the conservation of native species and habitats and our mission to save ecosystems. OUR SINCERE THANKS to MSS, Inc., Elderberry Wisdom Farm, the Oregon Invasive Species Council, and Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for their generous financial sponsorship for the 2024 Invasive Species Cook-off. When plants and animals are introduced to areas without their natural enemies, they can crowd out our native species. The U.S. spends over $120 billion annually on their control. Help us raise awareness about the impact of invasive species while taking a bite out of local invaders. Tickets are available now at appliedeco.org/cookoff.

  • A huge THANK YOU to the volunteers who came out this month to help restore prairie habitat for first foods at the Champoeg State Heritage Area! First Foods were eaten by indigenous groups before the arrival of Europeans, and continue to be harvested, grown, and collected today. Native Americans have a long history of food gathering at Champoeg State Heritage Area. The word “Champoeg” comes from an indigenous word that names it as “the place of the yampa,” an edible root that was harvested there. As part of previous restoration projects at the site, yampa has been reintroduced to this site, as well as many other First Foods such as camas, brodiaea, ookow, yarrow, and many others. Our last volunteer opportunity of the summer is coming up soon: join us for another day of prairie restoration at Champoeg on August 10th! More info can be found on our website at appliedeco.org/calendar. Our sincere thanks to the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for funding this restoration project, and to our partners at the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department for making this work possible.

  • Episode 3 of Seeds for Change is available now! In this month's episode, we interview Melanie Gisler, Southwest Branch Director with the Institute for Applied Ecology. Melanie has been with IAE since 2002 and has had a number of roles including Habitat Restoration Program Director, restoration ecologist, and seed program manager. In 2002 she helped launch the Native Seed Network and a regional native seed accession program. Since then, she has focused on expanding the scope of native plant materials programs, building collaborative projects with conservation partners, farmers, and tribes, and implementing large scale habitat restoration and recovery projects for rare plants and butterflies. She now builds collaborations with conservation partners in New Mexico. Seeds for Change is available on Spotify, Amazon Music, Castbox, RadioPublic, iHeartRadio, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts.

  • In answer to the question I had regarding what businesses who are interested in sustainability could do to also halt the loss of biodiversity: https://lnkd.in/dnPjXFkP. Climate change regulations -and business adherence to them will also positively impact bioD, but what else can be done as we face the 6th mass extinction event? Some thoughts here, but it's also important to think and act locally on this question. Start with your local conservation-based nonprofits.
