This first-of-its-kind white paper from the Institute for Private Capital sheds light on the performance of Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs), revealing persuasive opportunities for investors. In its analysis of SBIC performance over a 20-year period IPC found that, on average, all SBIC strategy types and levels of leverage demonstrated superior performance when compared to a non-SBIC peer group. Over the 2000-2020 period, SBICs had an average internal rate of return (IRR) of 16.9%, which is 4.13% higher than a comparable set of non-SBIC peer funds. New research shows public firms play a unique role in the dynamism of the economy through creative destruction. In this paper, authors examine the relationship between idiosyncratic volatility and the number of listed firms, and explain this relationship through Schumpeterian creative destruction. Comparatively, available data does not show a strong connection between changes in Census firms and creative destruction. This raises several interesting questions – why are firms that are more likely to contribute to creative destruction choosing to go public? Do these firms contribute because they go public? The results also indicate the importance of IPOs exits for private firms for creative destruction, and further supports existing literature on the relationship between startups and venture funded firms (which are more likely to use IPO exits) and healthy creative destruction in public markets.
