November is Native American Heritage Month! Many of us call Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia home. However, our indigenous community members are the original and founding culture of our region. It is essential not to erase them from history and the design of a more equitable future. The Chesapeake and Anacostia areas have been home to the Piscatay, Pamunkey, and Nacotchtank for centuries, with over 4,000 indigenous folks living in DC alone. This month we honor our indigenous neighbors and take steps to illuminate their rich history and carve new pathways to elevate the voices of these proud people. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #DC #Maryland #VA #IdigenousAmericans

Local health department staff: Don't miss out. Two more sessions on 10/24 and 10/29 currently available for sign-up. 👇 #NLPPW
HUD's Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes (OLHCHH) has published a request for information about the idea of moving a significant portion of the office's lead hazard reduction grants to a formula funding approach. The National Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition (NSHHC) is hosting three collaborative discussion sessions to provide space for their members and others, including state and local health departments, to consider HUD's new proposal. The sessions will provide a platform for discussion of HUD's proposal, the questions in the request for information, and how it may affect communities. If you have any interest or questions about the formula funding proposal, we strongly encourage you to attend one of the sessions! To get registration information on the sessions (first of which starts Friday, October 18), go to https://lnkd.in/eUdveEJM Background: OLHCHH currently awards grants using a competitive process where communities submit applications following a notice of funding opportunity. In the latest budget request that HUD submitted to Congress, OLHCHH requested that Congress allow them to award 80% of lead hazard reduction funds (and corresponding healthy homes supplemental funds) using a formula. This means that communities would not have to submit a competitive application – funding would simply go to those that qualify. 20% of the funding would remain competitive grants. Congress has not yet given HUD the approval to do this. While waiting, OLHCHH published the request for information to hear feedback from relevant parties about the idea and how they should design the program. Comments are due on November 15, 2024.
