TITLE: Adapting Existing Campus Spaces to Enhance Performance and Campus Life PRESENTERS: Becky Barnhart - Principal and Architect, Integrus Tina Campanella - Marketing Manager, Integrus PCAPPA Pacific Coast APPA is the Western Region of the parent organization APPA, which promotes the common interests of planning, maintenance and operation of facilities within the region’s educational institutions. This conference session offers insight into how campus facilities managers can thoughtfully assess and prioritize institutional updates in context of changing climate legislation and environmental compliance standards. Setting new buildings aside, to consider the process for determining how to quickly and effectively move the needle toward climate stewardship and resiliency with the large inventory of existing buildings and smaller spaces. Today is ‘The Great Oregon Shake Out’, an annual day to grow awareness of earthquake preparedness. At 10:17am, everyone is advised to ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ for 60 seconds to practice what to do as an earthquake hits. And it’s a good reminder for any of us in the broader Northwest to consider what to do before, during and after an earthquake event. It's not a matter of 'if' - but when! The Gladys Valley Marine Science Building at the OSU seaside campus in Newport is designed to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, and a related tsunami, setting the standard for new development in coastal areas. This interdisciplinary academic and research building is a feat of planning, engineering, and innovation. One of the first tsunami evacuation sites in the U.S., it demonstrates responsible building to withstand waves of water and debris, with an outside ramp to a rooftop emergency assembly area to accommodate up to 900 people from the campus and general community for up to three days. Senior Associate Ericka Colvin has been named a ‘Woman of Vision’ by the DJC Oregon! This annual recognition honors women in the Portland AEC arena who are shaping the built environment with their technical skills, leadership mentoring, community involvement and creating opportunities for future generations of women. Ericka is ‘visionary’ in that she has been working on the front edge toward design industry transformation on issues related to equity and sustainability for nearly two decades. As Director of Sustainable Practice with Integrus, she seeks to move the needle for sustainable success on client projects and educate co-workers on current sustainability trends and information. She was integral to creating several internal sustainable design tools to assist co-workers which include a “Sustainability Roadmap,” “Healthy Materials Framework,” and “Equitable Specification Database.” Ericka also initiated a carbon footprint audit process supporting our internal operational carbon reduction program. She also led participation of all three Integrus’ offices in the Just label program which transparently puts a company’s commitment to change and social justice status on view for others to see. Ericka also co-leads our firmwide DEI interest group focused on fostering equitable and inclusive design to meet the needs of clients in the public realm. Consistent with her philosophy that designers should be “global citizens,” she also spearheaded an annual Integrus Service Day. Her personal commitment to increasing diversity in the profession is evident in her participation with the Architecture Foundation of Oregon’s “Architects in Schools” program and volunteering at the “Hip Hop Architecture Camp” to empower underrepresented youth. Ericka is an asset to our team and we are thrilled to see her numerous ‘visionary’ efforts acknowledged in this way!

Regional Panel: Doing Business with The Tribes Associate Principal Dan Snook will moderate a panel discussion with representatives from regional Tribal development authorities in a group conversation about future Tribal growth and development. Given his experience working with several Tribes, most recently on the Northern Quest River Tower Hotel, Dan will direct the conversation about upcoming projects and AEC arena best practices for pursuing and working with Tribes.

We’re pleased to host a Design Soiree for the Seattle Architecture Foundation! Join us on Thursday, October 3rd for ‘Map the Square’ – an engaging and interactive exercise, discussing opportunities to evolve Pioneer Square through thoughtful zoning and adaptive reuse of its unreinforced masonry buildings. The evening will start with a brief presentation from regional expert Kathryn Rogers Merlino, an Associate Professor at the UW School of Architecture and Director of the Center for Preservation and Adaptive Reuse, followed by an interactive team exercise in and around Occidental Park, concluding with feedback/presentations from mapping teams about observations and outcomes of the exercise. This activity repeats one held a decade ago – when A Gallery hosted an interactive community art installation giving participants the chance to consider Pioneer Square from the perspective of a planner, to brainstorm future development needs. Let’s see what’s changed – and generate ideas for the future! Light food and beverages will be provided.
