This week, the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) announced new leadership. President and CEO of the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), Heidi Brock has been elected as President of ICFPA. Joining her as Vice President is José Carlos da Fonseca Junior, Director of International Relations of Ibá – Indústria Brasileira de Árvores (The Brazilian Tree Industry). The election was held during ICFPA’s Annual Meeting, which saw participation from delegates across 12 national forest and paper associations representing 26 countries worldwide. The meeting took place in Rome, Italy, at the UN FAO headquarters alongside the 27th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO 27) and the 9th World Forestry Week (WFW). Ms. Brock and Mr. Fonseca's leadership, marked by a dedication to sustainable practices and global collaboration, will guide ICFPA’s mission over the next two years. Last week, the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) hosted a panel discussion entitled “Climate Smart Forestry and Carbon Solutions for the Planet,” at the 19th Session of the UN Forum on Forests. It attracted representatives from the World Bank, the International Forestry Students Association, the UNFF Secretariat, and country representatives from Africa, North America, Europe, and the South Pacific. Global forest sector leaders Kathy Abusow, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Heidi Brock, American Forest & Paper Association, Ross Hampton, International Sustainable Forestry Coalition and Derek Nighbor, Forest Products Association of Canada offered perspectives from the global forest value chain on matters related to sustainable forest management, fire risk mitigation through climate smart forestry, product recyclability and the circular economy, and the importance of forest certification. Sharing insights and experiences about the power of forestry and forest products to deliver for people and the planet will help us make important progress towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. #UNFF19
