Perpetuates the legacy of distinguished Art Deco mural painter and architectural decorator, Hildreth Meière
About us
International Hildreth Meière Association (IHMA) is a not-for-profit organization that supports activities that educate and perpetuate the legacy of Art Deco Muralist Hildreth Meière, while also preserving and restoring her work. Hildreth Meière (me-AIR) was one of the most renown American muralists of the 20th century. During her forty-year career from the 1920s until her death in 1961, she pioneered a modern approach to murals that broke away from academic tradition and blended such influences as early Byzantine mosaics, Egyptian wall painting, classical Greek vase painting, and Native American beadwork into a style that came to be known as Art Deco. Working with leading architects of her day, Meière designed approximately 100 commissions, both secular and liturgical. Her best-known commissions include Radio City Music Hall, One Wall Street, St. Bartholomew’s Church, Temple Emanu-El, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. She also decorated the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln, the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis.

This week, HLW’s Richard Brennan and John Mack had the distinct pleasure of visiting One Wall Street to celebrate the "Red Room"’s official designation as a New York City Landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Adding to the excitement, this historic space will finally be accessible to the public within Printemps New York in Spring 2025—the first outpost of the legendary Parisian department store in the US. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our esteemed colleagues at The International Hildreth Meière Association and Printemps for hosting an unforgettable evening that allowed us to step back in time and appreciate the remarkable collaboration between Hildreth Meière, the master muralist, and Ralph Walker, HLW’s visionary architect. We eagerly anticipate the grand opening of Printemps in New York, where the public will soon experience the enduring legacy of this extraordinary partnership. #HLW #RalphWalker #HildrethMeière #OneWallStreet #RedRoom #NYCLandmarks

Last week, International Hildreth Meière Association (IHMA) President, Anna Kupik, had the honor of speaking at the National Academy of Sciences for the centennial celebration of their iconic building. It was an incredible evening exploring the intersection of science and Art Deco, and reflecting on acclaimed muralist Hildreth Meière's contributions to this historic structure. We are excited to share a recap of the event, highlighting the visionary collaboration between scientist George Ellery Hale, architect Bertram Goodhue, and artist Hildreth Meière (as well as sculptor Lee Lawrie and master builder Rafael Guastavino Jr.), and the lasting legacy of their work. New and #OpenAccess in the Modern Americas Series: Early Civilization and the American Modern: Images of Middle Eastern origins in the United States, 1893–1939 by Eva Miller. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a particular story about the United States’ role in the long history of world civilization was constructed in public spaces, through public art and popular histories. This narrative posited that civilization and its benefits – science, law, writing, art and architecture – began in Egypt and Mesopotamia before passing ever further westward, towards a triumphant culmination on the American continent. Early Civilization and the American Modern explores how this teleological story answered anxieties about the United States’ unique role in the long march of progress. Eva Miller focuses on important figures who collaborated on the creation of a visual, progressive narrative in key institutions, world’s fairs and popular media: Orientalist and public intellectual James Henry Breasted, astronomer George Ellery Hale, architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and decorative artists Lee Lawrie and Hildreth Meière. At a time when new information about the ancient Middle East was emerging through archaeological excavation, ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia appeared simultaneously old and new. This same period was crucial to the development of public space and civic life across the United States, as a shared sense of historical consciousness was actively pursued by politicians, philanthropists, intellectuals, architects and artists. What would the scientific imagery in the National Academy of Sciences building’s Great Hall—from the Prometheus mural by Albert Herter and the golden dome by Hildreth Meière—look like if recreated in the twenty-first century?
