Orthopaedic Surgeon by training, Inquiring Mind with Pragmatic Mindset by nature

“Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Vince Lombardi The International Orthopedic Education Network (IOEN) 2024 Technology, Outpatient, and Economics of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Course came and went almost as fast as the GT3 cars on the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. Automobiles are a great analogy for arthroplasty, and motorsports may be an even better metaphor for healthcare. The surgeon is akin to the race car driver, the front man/woman who bears the ultimate responsibility of winning/losing, but performance of the car depends on numerous people, e.g. owner, sponsor, crew chief, pit crew, engineers, mechanics, etc. To acheive a winning patient experience in healthcare, Surgeons depend on Anesthesia, APPs, SAs, CSTs, Nurses, SPD, Industry/Reps, Housekeeping, Maintenance, MAs, Call Center, and Adminstration to name a few. Different practice models are like different motorsport series, the cars are unique but building a cohesive team is still the key to success. J Douglas Boles delivered an inspiring keynote address that highlighted the scale of IMS, finding opportunity in times of difficulty, and the importance of maintaining personal interaction regardless of scope. Additionally, Raymond Kim and his crew gave an enlightening symposium on building/maintaining a high performance healthcare team. The term “𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲” is often synonymous with electronics, but digital advances in surgical planning and execution are only part of the story. Emerging remote patient monitoring solutions, AI chatboxes, and automated PROM collection may be more important in the immediate future. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 arthroplasty is here to stay. In addition to debating contemporary topics in hip/knee reconstruction, e.g. robotics, alignment, patellar resurfacing, & 1- vs 2-stage exchange, the subtleties of operating in a freestanding ASC were discussed, ie preventing/addressing complications. The 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 of US healthcare are nothing short of depressing, and a two-tiered system that mirrors the UK seems inevitable. Important CMS updates that may hasten this transformation were reviewed. In summary, it was a great meeting that I was fortunate to have a small role participating in. I can’t recall unfettered access to so many KOLs discussing practical topics in such an intimate setting. Congratulations to the Leonard Buller, MD, FAAOS, R. Michael Meneghini, MD, Matthew P. Abdel, M.D., Bryan Springer, Raymond Kim, & Elizabeth Gausden for organizing an outstanding event. You may not know their names yet, but keep your eyes on the following rising stars… Charles Hannon, MD, MBA, Nana O. Sarpong, MD, MBA, Courtney Bell, Cécile Batailler, Michael M. • What does Indy Car racing and Orthopedics have in common? Quite a lot it turns out. We had the privilege of taking our entire Technology meeting to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Not only did we get to see cars on the track for qualifying races but we also got an inside look at how the racetrack operates and the parallels of racing and orthopedics. We had the pleasure of hearing the president of IMS, Doug Boles, speak about how they are increasing technology efforts everyday to make the race more efficient and safe. Safer for the driver, the crew and the spectators. He spoke about how it takes an entire team to run the race. Drivers, pit crew, medical teams, race officials, the list goes on. Most importantly he spoke about how even though technology is great and helping improve things in our world we have to stay diligent in our efforts to make and keep personal connections with those around us. All things that can be transferred to the orthopedic industry. What an incredible event! We want to thank the IMS staff and Doug Boles for being so helpful and willing to let us experience the racing life for a little while.
