Budget reaction from British chambers of commerce
🗣️ Shevaun Haviland: "This is a tough budget for business to swallow but the Chancellor has looked to ease the pain by holding out a promise of better days ahead. “While some protection for smaller firms is welcome, the increase in employer National Insurance Contributions will place a further cost burden on business. This, coupled with a 6.7% increase in the National Living Wage, means many firms will find it more challenging to invest and recruit in the short-term. “But the Chancellor has looked to off-set the upfront hit on firms by outlining a longer-term framework to provide stability for the economy." 📰 Advocating for regional interests and holding the government to account are vital roles for local and regional press. That’s why it’s fantastic to see The Inverness Courier’s ‘Build the Bypass’ campaign shortlisted for the News Media Association’s Making a Difference Award 2024. This campaign champions the advancement of the A96 dualling between Inverness and Nairn and calls for a bypass to ease traffic in the town. Show your support and help Highland News & Media Ltd gain national recognition by voting here: https://lnkd.in/eh5Q7wj4 ❗️Be quick! Voting closes at 5pm today (Wednesday 30 October) and the winners will be announced on Friday 1 November. #ICmember #BuildTheBypass #A96 #vote

The business community is waiting with a degree of trepidation for today’s budget. We suspect there will be good and bad news for business. On the positive side we are expecting announcements on investment which should lead to business growth. But on the down side we are expecting tax increases to be focussed on businesses which, along with the costs of the recently announced employment rights package, we worry will have a large negative impact on small businesses. Three times a year we host a Bank of England panel where some of our members hear directly from the bank and their thoughts on the economy, and also feed in their current experience and business conditions which helps to shape monetary policy. We have a panel at 2pm today so we’ll be one of the first to hear the Bank of England’s reaction to the budget. It’s important the meetings are confidential so that the businesses can speak freely, but we’ll share what we can.

📢 Ahead of the Autumn Budget, Inverness Chamber of Commerce CEO, Colin Marr calls for caution on new business taxes. With small businesses facing rising costs, especially in tourism & rural sectors, extra business taxation could impact our local economy significantly.
