We see ads for optical imagery spatial resolutions as fine as 15 or 30 cm showcased next to stunning, full-color images. But what’s often hidden in the fine print is that this sharp resolution only applies to black-and-white (panchromatic) images, not the color (multispectral) images that most users rely on. In today’s highly competitive remote sensing market, it’s easy to get swept up in flashy marketing tactics. Today, we're taking a candid look at how optical satellite imagery is often oversold – and why airborne data acquisition is still the gold standard for high-precision applications. #AerialAquisition #OpticalImagery #SpatialResolution #RemoteSensing

By pairing satellites and aircraft, NASA has been acquiring high-resolution and timely insights into snowmelt and water resources in the Arctic for the last few years. This data is helping water managers make critical conservation decisions more effectively. The satellites provide broad, real-time data that helps guide rapid updates to flight planning, making aircraft more effective in capturing higher-resolution snow cover data. Paired together, they enable more precise and efficient data collection. This is our favourite use case for optimizing environmental monitoring efforts. Why does the world need another methane-detecting satellite? 🛰️ Because it plays a pivotal role in ramping up efforts to share public data on emission sources and helping drive climate action. 🌍 The launch of Tanager-1 was a milestone for the Carbon Mapper Coalition, which is working to develop and deploy satellites that will detect and quantify methane super-emitters AND pinpoint their sources at a granular scale to support direct mitigation action. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Planet "When we've shared our data with oil and gas companies, landfill operators, and regulators, what they tell us is nearly half of the emissions that we're reporting were previously unknown. And in many cases, they can quickly repair them,” Riley Duren, Carbon Mapper CEO recently told Heatmap News. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/g35NCCPV #CutMethane #Climate #Data

In agriculture, timely and accurate data is important for optimizing crop yields. While satellite imagery provides broad coverage, it has limitations like infrequent updates and cloud cover. Aircraft-based optical imagery addresses these challenges by offering high-resolution, on-demand data. This flexibility allows farmers to monitor crop health in real-time, identify potential issues early, and make informed decisions. For instance, aircraft can capture detailed images of fields during critical growth periods, enabling precise interventions that enhance overall yield and sustainability. This approach is transforming how agricultural data is utilized, providing the actionable insights needed for more effective farm management. #OpticalImagery #DataAcquisition #HighResolution #Agriculture #CropMonitoring
