Misconception: “I should conduct screening tests to identify combustibility and/or explosibility.” NFPA 652 recommends screening tests to determine combustibility or explosibility. This includes burn rate for determining combustibility and explosion severity (Go/No Go) screening or minimum explosible concentration for determining explosibility. It also permits an assumption of combustibility and/or explosibility. For materials known to be combustible or explosible (e.g., organic materials, plastics, wood, fine metals) it may make more sense to assume combustibility and explosibility and skip these screening steps in lieu of more detailed characterization tests. The characterization tests should be chosen to support the performance-based design methods, dust hazard analyses, risk assessments, or hazard mitigation and prevention specifications, as applicable.
