Farm Bureau is the voice of agriculture, and agriculture is 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 evolving. So it’s important for Iowa Farm Bureau staff to embrace opportunities that grow their knowledge of ag and the issues facing Farm Bureau’s farmer/ag members. Today we had the opportunity to tour and learn about multiple sites in the Ames area that showcase ag innovation and education! A couple of highlights: 🐖 We toured the largest farm animal veterinary medicine diagnostic lab in the nation: Iowa State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. 95% of the lab’s work pertains to farm animals, to support livestock farmers and veterinarians and ensure food safety for all of us, but the lab’s work touches our lives in other ways as well. For example, the ISU lab helped the State Hygienic Lab at the University of Iowa scale up its COVID-19 testing at the beginning of the pandemic. Iowa Farm Bureau has played a crucial role in helping the lab expand and modernize its facilities in recent years. 💧 We also visited Gross-Wen Technologies in Slater, which has developed a pioneering algae-based water treatment system for rural communities and commercial processing customers. GWT’s patented system uses specialized algae to remove targeted nutrients from wastewater and capture those nutrients in a way that can be converted into a fertilizer or other products. Gross-Wen is one of several companies Iowa Farm Bureau invests in through its Rural Vitality Fund (which supports the financing needs of qualifying rural Iowa businesses). It was a great opportunity to learn about a unique approach to protecting water quality and the role Farm Bureau plays in that effort.

Today's FFA members are tomorrow's Farm Bureau leaders! We're grateful for our strong partnership with Iowa FFA, and today we had the opportunity to host members of the Iowa FFA state officer team at the Iowa Farm Bureau building. The state officer team had a chance to visit with Farm Bureau staff and leaders, learning about the many ways our organization serves agriculture and the entire state.

Earlier this week, we were in Ames celebrating Iowa agriculture’s bright 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 with Iowa FFA students. Today, we were at Living History Farms, helping preserve agriculture’s rich 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮! Nearly 60 Iowa Farm Bureau staff members participated in today’s volunteer event — painting, cleaning, landscaping, replacing old boardwalk boards and tackling other projects to help Living History Farms prepare for guests this spring.

Food brings our communities together. No one understands that better than farm families. During National Agriculture Week and in early 2024, 20 county Farm Bureaus donated more than $44,000 to their local food pantries. From “Cram the Cab” promotions to “grocery cart races” at local supermarkets, county Farm Bureaus across the state organized a variety of creative initiatives to generate needed donations for food-insecure families.
