A 39-year old man from #Somerset, #Kentucky, was #sentenced to 81 months in federal prison for #identitytheft and #faking his own #death in government registry systems. A press release from the U.S. #DepartmentofJustice (#DoJ) informs that Jesse Kipf used #stolen #credentials to access the Hawaii Death Registry System to register himself as a deceased person. The reason behind the intrusion was to avoid paying child support obligations. “Kipf then completed a State of Hawaii Death Certificate Worksheet, assigned himself as the medical certifier for the case and certified his death, using the digital signature of the doctor.”.... https://lnkd.in/dfc7XRUK

If you tell the federal government you are doing something, they will believe you..,but you better be doing it... The #UnitedStates has filed a complaint-in-intervention against the #Georgia #Institute of #Technology (#GeorgiaTech) and #GeorgiaTechResearchCorporation (#GTRC) raising claims under the #FalseClaimsAct and federal common law alleging that those defendants failed to meet cybersecurity requirements in connection with U.S. #DepartmentofDefense (#DoD) contracts. GTRC is an affiliate of Georgia Tech that contracts with government agencies for work to be performed at Georgia Tech and its related entities. On February 20, 2024, the United States intervened in a whistleblower suit brought by current and former members of Georgia Tech’s cybersecurity team against Georgia Tech and GTRC. “Cybersecurity compliance by government contractors is critical in safeguarding U.S. information and systems against threats posed by malicious actors,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. “For this reason, we expect contractors to abide by cybersecurity requirements in their contracts and grants, regardless of the size or type of the organization or the number of contracts involved. The company that #profits off #internet traffic, and was recently found guilty of being a #monopoly, and #unfair business practices, #Google has brokered a first-in-the-nation deal with #California #lawmakers to direct #millions of #dollars to local #newsrooms, the latest in a series of global efforts to require #tech companies to #support the #journalism #theyprofitfrom. California emulated a strategy that other countries like #Canada have used to try and reverse the journalism industry’s decline as readership migrated online and advertising dollars evaporated. But the California agreement includes a novel – and controversial — element with funding earmarked for artificial intelligence, a technology that many journalists fear could replace their jobs, and it immediately drew sharp criticism from journalists and Democratic lawmakers. https://lnkd.in/dWNRzQZH

The Port of #Seattle, which includes #SeattleTacoma #International #Airport, is experiencing #outages that may have been caused by a #cyberattack, Port officials said on Saturday. The outages are impacting #internet and #webbased systems. #Passengers may experience some disruptions, such as #longlines and delays at #baggage check or #ticketingcounters. #PortofSeattle officials did not immediately provide additional information about the #cyberattack. Anyone traveling via Sea-Tac Airport is encouraged to check in with their airline for updates. #SEA officials also suggest loading your #mobile #boardingpass on your #phone and registering checked bagged via your airline’s app before arriving to the airport. https://lnkd.in/ge8TkEBB

This was interesting (to me) because #Cox is the large ISP in this area. Apprears they are making the argument in court, to overturn a ruling in a #copyright #infringement lawsuit brought by #Sony. Cox said in a press release that a recent #appealscourt ruling "would force #ISPs to terminate #Internet #service to #households or #businesses based on #unproven #allegations of infringing activity, and put them in a position of having to #police their networks—contrary to customer expectations... Terminating Internet service would not just impact the individual accused of unlawfully downloading content, it would kick an entire household off the Internet." https://lnkd.in/gb3xt6GJ
