  • There is no place like home, even for teachers. From early childhood programming to Burnsville High School, there are new teachers who have seen it all before — when they were students here. No fewer than seven BHS alumni joined District 191 this year as first-year, full-time staff members. “I think it’s the funnest thing ever to go full circle and teach at the same elementary school that you attended,” said Amina Mohamed, a first-grade teacher at Sky Oaks Elementary. “I couldn’t imagine teaching at some place other than District 191. We’re as diverse and as different as our community. We’re all different, but we are still one big family!” https://lnkd.in/dbkKa8aY

  • Thanks to a partnership between District 191 and the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce, teachers had the unique opportunity to tour local businesses this summer and build their understanding of the current workforce needs through the Teacher Externship Program. The tours were held over the course of two days and provided teachers with a look at what skills these companies need in their employees and how the classroom teachers' subject matter directly relates to those different needs. Thanks goes out to New Spaces, M Fairview Health, Collins Aerospace and the City of Burnsville for opening your doors to our educators and providing an inside look at your organization. • Yesterday, District 191 schools observed and participated in the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (Canada) or Orange Shirt Day. Staff members joined students at schools across the district, wearing orange shirts to honor the Indigenous survivors of the Canadian Indian residential school system and to remember those who never made it home. The boarding school era in the United States had devastating impacts on Indigenous communities. Many of the effects are still being felt today. One of the best ways our school community can support our Indigenous community is by educating ourselves on this history and honoring the healing journey of the survivors and their families. A special thank you goes out to District 191 cultural liaisons Rebecca Mousseau & Madison McKinney, representing American Indian Education in One91, for their important work in our community. #CommunityStrong #One91
