We are materials engineers, creating new materials & improving existing ones. Materials matter at Iowa State University.
About us
We are the Iowa State University Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), where Materials Matter. Materials engineers create new materials and improve existing materials. Everything is limited by the materials that are used to produce it. Materials engineers understand the relationship between the properties of a material and its internal structure — from the macro level down to the atomic level. The better the materials, the better the end result — it’s as simple as that. Think of all the different nanotechnology and manufacturing materials used to create biomedical devices, computer chips, cell phones, and engines. We combine engineering, physics, and chemistry principles to solve real-world problems using a material’s property and internal structure. Our materials engineering graduates have built successful careers in local communities and around the world, in areas such as ceramics, metals, and polymers. We help students on their adventure to be passionate, be creative, be greater than they imagine, and work to change the world. MSE: Materials Matter.

We love to see it! Congrats to Sid Pathak and all involved!
We were recently awarded the NASA EPSCoR Rapid Response Research (R3) grant for 2024! Our project, "Advancing In-Space Construction through Cold Welding” aims to investigate cold-welding as a principal method for joining materials in space. This research will focus on optimizing parameters for bonding similar and dissimilar cold-welded metal joints and their characterization under extreme cryogenic and elevated temperature conditions experienced during long-duration deep space missions. This research will help advance technologies for in-space manufacturing and construction, contributing to the future of space exploration. The Quad Cities Manufacturing Institute (QCMI) recently launched as a catalyst for the defense and manufacturing sectors across the Midwest. Iowa State University, partnered with the University of Illinois System and Western Illinois University. The institute will focus on cutting-edge research and development in advanced and additive manufacturing and materials. QCMI will work closely with defense and industry partners to transition breakthroughs into the public realm, while also training and nurturing a skilled workforce.
