We break barriers for women and nonbinary journalists because without their voices, there is no full story.

About us

  • IWMF Stands with Mónica Velásquez Villacís and Andersson Boscán In Ecuador, investigative journalist and 2024 Courage in Journalism Awardee Mónica Velásquez Villacís and her co-worker Andersson Boscán are facing grave danger for their reporting on corruption and international drug trafficking. Their work with La Posta has uncovered significant failures within the Ecuadorian Attorney General’s Office, revealing how these oversights have allowed criminal networks to operate with impunity. Instead of addressing these critical issues, the Attorney General has launched a public attack against Mónica and Andersson, accusing them of being a “resonance box” for crime. These unfounded allegations have put them in an extremely vulnerable position, to the point where they require protection as “witnesses” from the very institution that is targeting them. The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) urgently calls for global support to protect Mónica and Andersson. Their situation is a stark reminder of the threats journalists face worldwide. This is not just about two journalists; it is about defending the fundamental right to free and independent media. We urge global attention and for the international community to stand with Mónica and Andersson. Demand accountability and transparency from Ecuadorian authorities. Advocate for the safety and protection of Mónica, Andersson, and their colleagues.

This ruling is a vital affirmation of press freedom in the Philippines. The IWMF urges the judiciary to promptly drop the remaining two court cases against Rappler and Ressa, as these ongoing legal challenges threaten independent journalism and accountability in the country. https://lnkd.in/grBDUN9t

  • U.S.-Russian citizen and RFE/RL editor Alsu Kurmasheva has been freed as part of a prisoner swap between Russia and Western nations. After a 9-month detention and unjust conviction for “fake news,” Alsu can finally reunite with her loved ones. Also released: WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. No journalist should ever face imprisonment for doing their job. We celebrate Alsu’s release and continue to advocate for all journalists unjustly detained worldwide. #PressFreedom #JournalismIsNotACrime
