What a day it’s been in Tokyo with one of the most dramatic leadership elections in memory. Congratulations to new LDP President and soon to be Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba! Look forward to continuing to advance US-Japan relations together in these turbulent times.

This fall, we’re doing things a little differently with two concurrent exhibitions in our gallery, a reflection of Japan Society Gallery Director Michele Bambling’s vision for more collaborative and experimental programming. One week from today, we're excited to open "Bunraku Backstage" and "Acky Bright: Studio Infinity"—two exhibitions that embody this new direction. A dramatic art integrating performances of skilled puppetry, shamisen music and narration, #bunraku has evolved in Japan since the early 17th century and was recognized by UNESCO as a "masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity." "Bunraku Backstage" offers a rare opportunity to get up close to this treasured art form, showcasing working puppets, props and instruments—on loan from the National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka. #BunrakuBackstage Meanwhile, "Acky Bright: Studio Infinity" spotlights the innovative work of rising manga artist Acky Bright, whose unique 'kawakakkoii' (cute and cool) style has shaped global campaigns with major brands like McDonald's and Netflix. Visitors will also have the chance to see Acky Bright in action during live drawing sessions throughout the opening weekend. #AckyBrightNYC Both exhibitions will run from October 4, 2024 to January 19, 2025. 🏆 A massive congratulations to #Shōgun and its historic 18 Emmy wins, including Best Drama, Best Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Actress for Anna Sawai! Sanada and Sawai have become the first Japanese actors to take home Emmys in their respective categories, with Shōgun making history as the first non-English-language series to win Best Drama. Japan Society was honored to host the Shōgun team earlier this year for an exclusive preview screening and panel. You can watch our full Q&A to hear Sanada, Sawai and the show's creators discuss their journey in bringing this epic story to life: https://lnkd.in/e45uXmMR 📸: Ayumi Sakamoto #ShogunFX #Emmys #HiroyukiSanada #AnnaSawai

“RISKS and RETURNS” Creating Success in Business and Life is the new must read by legendary business leader, Former US Secretary of Commerce; Wilbur L. Ross, Jr. With Presider Douglas Peterson President & CEO, S&P Global, Joshua Walker Walker, President and CEO of Japan Society and other global leaders at Japan Society, Business and Policy Forum in NYC. Secretary Ross, also former Board Chair of Japan Society, shared learnings from many experiences including hard work, self reliance, education, and responsibility. Humbly describing himself as a “late bloomer” - leaving Rothschild to start his own business at 63, named to be US Secretary of Commerce at 79, and publishing this candid life and business reflection at 86. He surely will add to his global impact and economic legacy by the time he gets to 100! Great connecting with Jason Rekate Keishi Hotsuki Gary Kozlowski Seth Coren, CFP® Frederick H. Katayama and others. Thank you Secretary Ross for showing us that “Hard Work Wins”! Thank you Daphne Youree photography Citi Deloitte Mizuho Toyota Motor Corporation sponsors luncheon discussion

Great to welcome back the Honorable Wilbur L. Ross, former U.S. Commerce Secretary and past Board Chair of Japan Society, to Japan Society’s Business & Policy Forum on the occasion of his new book, “Risks and Returns.” Hosted a smaller celebration for him in my office with our board members before an insightful discussion led by our Executive Committee member Douglas Peterson. As I told the Secretary and you can see in the pictures he seemed quite comfortable behind my desk :) As a self described late bloomer who started his first business at 63 became a Cabinet Secretary at almost 80 and is publishing his first book at 86 his anecdotes and wit were on point from Nippon Steel to WTO. It was most heartening to hear he stays in touch with his successor Secretary Raimondo who visited us just a few months ago and proves that Japan can remain a bipartisan ally even in these polarized times. I was honored to receive a signed copy of Secretary Ross’s new book I can’t wait to read. My sincere thanks to Secretary Ross, along with Japan Society’s board members and corporate partners, for their participation and insights.

53 years ago today, we opened the doors to our iconic landmarked building in Manhattan's vibrant Turtle Bay neighborhood, a stone's throw from the United Nations. Designed by Junzo Yoshimura, it became the first permanent structure in New York City created by a leading Japanese architect. Here's a snapshot from 1971 when it all started! 📸: © Taisuke Ogawa
