Perhaps a good idea to ship as much as possible now and store as much inventory as feasible before the union contracts expire on September 30th.

There seems to be no better time to stock the shelves for the holidays than right now! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? The threat of a strike by longshore workers at U.S. ports could lead to a near-record surge in import container traffic, as retailers rush to bring in holiday goods ahead of potential disruptions. Ongoing supply chain disruptions, including attacks on commercial vessels and congestion at Asian ports, have already impacted shipping, prompting retailers to take precautions such as shifting cargo to West Coast ports. Both the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates are urging negotiations to resume in order to avoid a prolonged strike, emphasizing the potential negative impact on retailers and the economy. 📌 𝗝𝗕𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 - 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Adam Gray While the ultimate impact of a potential prolonged labor strike at the ports remains to be determined, there are not many versions of this story where it could end up being “good” for the U.S. Economy to see this go unresolved. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀? After covering this topic recently, I mentioned it seemed like it would be a good idea to ship as much as possible now and store as much inventory as feasible before the union contracts expire on September 30th. In response, it appears I am not alone based on the current and expected near and short-term volumes hitting the ports. Combined with a recent dip in fuel prices and crude production due to historically low seasonal demand, there seems to be no better time to stock the shelves for the holidays than right now. image source: Canva license Additional reading: https://lnkd.in/e8SWkexG

Do you need the right TMS or Routing Solution for your fleet? We should connect; I know a guy.

What steps should the trucking industry take to bridge the gap between drivers and office staff and improve overall driver retention? 🚛 Addressing Driver Concerns and Enhancing the Trucking Industry: A Call for Change in the Trucking Industry 🚛 Jonathan, a committed CDL-A truck driver since 2019, has provided valuable insights into the challenges drivers encounter today. In response to an earlier post on driver retention, where I emphasized strategies like competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, and performance-based incentives, Jonathan suggests that the solution might be more straightforward and cost-effective: RESPECT. “The trucking industry needs a huge change overall! Including training the dispatchers and those in the office. There’s such a huge disconnect between driver and company, contributing to the driver shortage.” Jonathan highlights several key issues:  📞Communication Breakdown: Poor communication and lack of understanding of D.O.T regulations from office staff. 🚫Leadership Disconnect: Leadership often lacks CDL experience, leading to unrealistic expectations and poor decision-making. ⚠️Safety Concerns: Drivers are frequently told not to worry about safety, but they bear the brunt of violations. ❌Unfulfilled Promises: Promises made to drivers are often not kept, leading to frustration and turnover. “Not being heard is the #1 reason why drivers leave. We can’t fix that if organizations aren’t willing to train office staff and understand the driver’s job.” Our industry must listen to its drivers and make the necessary changes to bridge this gap. Let’s work together to create a more connected and supportive environment for our drivers. 🚚💪 #Trucking #Logistics #jbfreporter #DriverShortage #IndustryChange #Communication #Leadership

Is your fleet ready to embrace renewable diesel for cost savings and sustainability? According to a study by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), switching to renewable diesel could lead to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions per truck life cycle by 67.3%, a stark contrast to the 30.0 to 39.5% decrease offered by battery electric vehicle (BEV) trucks. And also worth noting, renewable diesel lowers maintenance costs for diesel engines and offers significant environmental benefits, including a 65% reduction in carbon intensity compared to petroleum diesel. 📌 𝗝𝗕𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 - 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Kimberly Lynch Renewable diesel emerges as a promising solution. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, renewable diesel is derived from waste and residues, turning what was once considered waste into a valuable resource. This innovative fuel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and offers operational benefits such as lower maintenance costs and improved vehicle performance. Adopting renewable diesel does not require any modifications to existing diesel engines, making it a practical and immediately deployable solution for the trucking industry. It also provides a reliable and consistent energy source, unlike some other renewable energy options that can be intermittent. While electric vehicles hold great promise for the future, the current challenges related to battery technology, charging infrastructure, and energy density make renewable diesel a more feasible option for the present (see chart below). As such, renewable diesel stands out as a key player in the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Have you made the transition yet or are you planning to make the change? WRDA 2024: Critical Investments in Water Infrastructure to Boost Shipping Efficiency 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 2024 bill, passed with bipartisan support, will inject billions into the nation's ports, dams, and waterways to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and enhance community resilience. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻? The bill authorizes feasibility studies and construction projects for ports, dams, waterways, and locks, with a focus on expediting ongoing Army Corps projects and addressing water and wastewater needs in communities nationwide. Stakeholders from various industries, including transportation, infrastructure, and maritime sectors, have endorsed the biennial legislation, recognizing its importance in facilitating trade, cargo movement, and infrastructure investments. 📌 𝗝𝗕𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 - 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Hugo Perez, PMP This is an important step towards enhancing and modernizing our nation's water infrastructure. The bipartisan support is a positive sign, demonstrating what can be achieved when lawmakers prioritize practical solutions over partisan politics. Congress has passed the WRDA every two years since 2016. The specific provisions and focus areas of the 2024 version present particular advantages that make it a notable win for the shipping and transportation sectors this year. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀? Improved and expanded infrastructure can help alleviate disruptions and bottlenecks at key points in the supply chain by creating a more efficient, resilient, and cost-effective system for moving goods. Tariff increase on Chinese EVs, batteries, tech and medical products pushed back until mid-August. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? The U.S. Trade Representative has postponed implementing large tariff increases on Chinese imports, including a 25% duty hike on ship-to-shore cranes, and a final decision is expected later this month. The proposed tariffs have raised concerns from port authorities and industry groups about potential harm to port efficiency, supply chains, and the U.S. economy. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻? The delay in tariff implementation allows time for further review and potential adjustments, with over 1,100 public comments being considered, highlighting the significant role these tariffs could play in shaping the economic landscape for American businesses. 📌 𝗝𝗕𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 - 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Adam Gray In case anyone hasn’t thought in detail about the complexities of International Trade agreements and the offshore manufacturing of heavy industrial machines and component materials, this delayed Tariff hike on Chinese imports exemplifies the issue wonderfully. While superficially, most Americans would likely agree that, conceptually, making Chinese goods less competitive to persuade the use of U.S. vendors while generating additional revenue for the economy is a good plan. The issue becomes very complex when the things you need to renovate the infrastructure of U.S. commerce aren’t readily available from U.S. vendors. With the port issues plaguing the U.S. this year, from the Baltimore accident to the threat of union labor strikes, the last thing our already struggling import and export infrastructure needs is to be legislated into being more expensive to repair and maintain. With any significant supply chain project, there is always the possibility of what we call “unintended consequences.” From missed integrations to fringe ordering or financial/billing systems, anticipated vendor support, or hardware acquisitions, there is always a period after the initial design where a new obstacle is discovered seemingly every other day. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀? You need to be thorough in your process documentation, current and future state. Understand the requirements and the process changes you are signing up for, and develop a plan to check all the boxes. Above all, make sure the business solution makes sense on paper before committing to the build timelines, or you will risk delays and budget impacts that frequently aren’t covered in basic contingency planning.
