Is your fleet ready to embrace renewable diesel for cost savings and sustainability? According to a study by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), switching to renewable diesel could lead to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions per truck life cycle by 67.3%, a stark contrast to the 30.0 to 39.5% decrease offered by battery electric vehicle (BEV) trucks. And also worth noting, renewable diesel lowers maintenance costs for diesel engines and offers significant environmental benefits, including a 65% reduction in carbon intensity compared to petroleum diesel. 📌 𝗝𝗕𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 - 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Kimberly Lynch Renewable diesel emerges as a promising solution. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, renewable diesel is derived from waste and residues, turning what was once considered waste into a valuable resource. This innovative fuel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and offers operational benefits such as lower maintenance costs and improved vehicle performance. Adopting renewable diesel does not require any modifications to existing diesel engines, making it a practical and immediately deployable solution for the trucking industry. It also provides a reliable and consistent energy source, unlike some other renewable energy options that can be intermittent. While electric vehicles hold great promise for the future, the current challenges related to battery technology, charging infrastructure, and energy density make renewable diesel a more feasible option for the present (see chart below). Certas Energy announces industry first HVO fleet balancing calculator 🔌 Certas Energy has created the industry’s first HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fleet balancing calculator, allowing fleet operators to calculate the cost of mixing HVO with traditional diesel to aid decarbonisation. HVO is a lower carbon alternative diesel which offers immediate greenhouse gas emissions savings of up to 90% compared to diesel across the product life cycle. It also burns cleaner, emitting fewer particulates compared to conventional diesel. In addition, storage is simpler because HVO has a shelf life of up to 10 years, and is biodegradable and non-toxic. However, HVO is more expensive per litre than conventional diesel, making it more practical for some operators to blend HVO with diesel, or only use HVO in some situations. For example, an operator could commit to one tank of HVO a month, or use HVO in congested areas to reduce air pollution. Zemo publishes an excellent study showing the benefits of renewable fuels. Credit to authors, Gloria Esposito and Jackie savage. A couple of quotes from the press release: ·        Organisations developing their fleet decarbonisation strategies should also consider vehicle life cycle GHG emissions. In some circumstances, renewable fuels can achieve greater GHG emissions savings for the available budget than battery electric vehicles. ·        Operators of electric vehicles should also consider the size and capacity of the batteries used in their vehicles and optimise these depending on the use case. Larger, heavier batteries offer improved vehicle range, but emit more GHG emissions during production, increase vehicle consumption and may also reduce payload capacity.
