Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC) brought together over 80 leaders throughout #California to lobby three key priority bills for the Jewish community & caucus. AB 2918, which adds common sense guardrails and implementation requirements to protect K-12 ethnic studies from bias and discrimination, was a top priority bill for the group. After testifying in front of the appropriations committee, all 80 participants went into 40+ lobbying meetings with state legislators regarding these key bills. Elevating Jewish voices and bringing Jewish voices to the table is one of the key ways Jewish Silicon Valley believes we can help support the fight against Jew-hatred. The Jewish community rallied in Sacramento to advocate for four of our priority bills this legislative session. Thank you, Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC), for leading our delegation. What legislation did we lobby for? - AB 2918: This bill requires the governing board of a local educational agency (LEA) and governing body of a charter to allow teachers, parents, guardians, and community members to review locally adopted ethnic studies courses, as specified, and creates conditions and parameters for ethnic studies courses. - AB 2925: Requires antisemitism to be included in higher education anti-discrimination and DEI trainings. - SB 1287: Requires higher education institutions to implement code of conduct policies around appropriate punishments for students who call for genocide of another people. - SB 1277: Codifies the CA Teachers Collaborative on Holocaust and Genocide Education as an official state program. The California legislature is returning from "Summer Recess" and several of our Jewish community priority bills still have hurdles to overcome. While we support many bills, we are partnering with Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC) to ensure the remaining bills can cross the finish line. Chants of "intifada" echoing through hallways, doctors sharing antisemitic posts online, nurses donning "Free Palestine" pins while treating patients - this is what has taken place at University of California, San Francisco. As a result, Jewish patients and staff are feeling unsafe according to Jewish Journal. JCRC put out the following statement last month after The New York Times brought the issue into the national spotlight: While the university has made strong public comments in support of its Jewish community, it needs to follow through on those statements with decisive action, without which antisemitism is becoming normalized in this healthcare setting. This starts with dismissing the perpetrators of this dangerous climate on staff, so that Jews feel safe practicing medicine and seeking care at UCSF. https://lnkd.in/gHjAnWdR
