Special thanks to Dan Fleischman for sharing this important story of the vital impact of supportive services provided to residents in affordable housing.
"What we have here is something very special." - Vicki Davidson, Program Coordinator at the Greentree-Teutonia Community Learning Center. In this incredible series in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, photojournalist Angela Peterson draws on 15 months of work to document the residents and staff of an affordable housing community in Milwaukee. The series highlights the importance of affordable housing with high-quality, on-site supportive services. I'm proud to know Miss Vicki and her mother, who is a longtime resident of Jewish Family Services housing, and I hope that we can have some of the same impact upon resident lives through our work at JFS. https://lnkd.in/grPCdS7r https://lnkd.in/gVmcAEZ2

Every year, JFS Housing invites all residents at its affordable housing campus to join in an annual Back-to-School Barbeque in August. This year there are many to thank for the event's success! JFS celebrated a crowd of more than 150 residents of JFS affordable housing at Bradley Crossing and Deerwood Crossing in Brown Deer! Thanks to the generosity of board members Adam Witkov with Ashton Henry, Mark Laux, Bonnie Joseph, Roberta London, Laurie Biskowitz and Sylvan Leabman (not present); to sponsors Bank Five Nine, Tri City National Bank and NextGen Milwaukee, private donors, and community partners - School District of Brown Deer Brown Deer Library, North Shore Fire/Rescue, North Shore Health Department, and Milwaukee Admirals! Also thanks to Café Corazon Brown Deer and Milwaukee Pretzel Company for your raffle donations! Though the Back-to-School BBQ is an annual event, this was the first year that JFS sought and received financial support for year-round mental health services for children and their families. Thanks to the support generated with this effort, 400 students will continue to receive services at JFS. For anyone that cares about the issue of homelessness, please come to this free film screening. A Bigger Vision Films is bringing their new film Beyond the Bridge: A Solution to Homelessness to Milwaukee on August 1st at 5:30. The showing will be at the Varsity Theater at Marquette University. The film demonstrates how the only way to reduce homelessness is community collaboration with a focus on Housing First. The Milwaukee showing is part of a national social impact campaign around the issue of homelessness and the message is even more important with the recent Supreme Court ruling in Grants Pass. Several Milwaukeeans are featured in this national film. Special shout out to Beth Weirick, Omar Shaikh, Derek Mosley, JD, and many others for your participation and support!! https://lnkd.in/gAtVtpHU
