🐝 Bee-ware of the "Be" Buzz in Your Writing!🐝 As someone who loves bees but is allergic to them, I've learned to appreciate them from a safe distance. Similarly, in writing, we often overuse forms of "to be" without realizing it. It's time to go on a "Be" hunt in your document! Why hunt for "be"? Overuse can weaken your prose. By replacing "be" verbs with more active, descriptive ones, you can: 🐝 Add dynamism to your writing 🐝 Show instead of tell 🐝 Increase clarity and precision But remember, not all "be" verbs are bad! Sometimes, they're the perfect choice for concise, clear statements. Want to strengthen your writing? Join me on a "Be" hunt! Use MS Word’s search function to look for this word in your paper. How many times does it show up? Share in the comments below! #WritingTips #EditingHacks #AcademicWriting

One of my dear clients just messaged me the good news—her book has passed peer review at Routledge and she’s gearing up to complete the manuscript. Today we worked on nailing down the exact title. I am teary, in a good way, for my client! Her work has the potential to make a significant contribution to the field of psychology and I am so glad to be part of her ongoing process to publication. Today has been a great day of gardening and celebrating my client’s success! More details as soon as she has a publication date. Don’t forget—my other client, Barbara Morrill’s book launches in September! Check it out. https://lnkd.in/ekjYssxk

Enrollment is open for the EFA webinar Effective Science Editing: Lessons from Fiction and Academia! In this 90-minute webinar, you’ll learn how to ensure a piece of science writing hooks a reader’s attention in the beginning, holds the reader’s attention while conveying important information in the middle, and rewards the reader’s attention by delivering on promises in the end. We’ll also talk about best practices for ordering information at the sentence, paragraph, and overall structural level. This talk is designed for science editors and writers, though it may be helpful to anyone who translates professional jargon into clear, accessible language. It will be especially helpful to those who work on shorter-form science writing, such as articles, but almost every principle will apply to book-length science writing as well. Date: August 22, 2024 Time 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm EST To register, please visit https://lnkd.in/esAWhdMs

LinkedIn Guide: 🖋️ APA 7: Mastering Compound Adjectives 🧠   Did you know APA 7 changed how we format certain compound adjectives? Here's a quick guide: 📌 Use an en dash (–) for compound adjectives where one element is a compound term or phrase.   Example: evidence–based practice   ❌ Old way (APA 6): evidence-based practice  ✅ New way (APA 7): evidence–based practice   Why? The en dash shows a more complex relationship between terms.   🧐Other examples: Cognitive–behavioral therapy Mixed–methods research Theory–practice gap   💡 Pro Tip: Type an en dash by holding Alt + 0150 on the numeric keypad.   Improve your academic writing with these small but impactful changes!   Questions about APA 7? 🤖📚 Ethically Integrating AI into Academic Writing: My Journey As an editor and writer, I've been exploring how to ethically use AI in academic writing. Here's a glimpse into my process: 1️⃣ AI as Research Assistant: I use AI to take dictation and organize quotes from my sources. That's all I allow it to do. 2️⃣ Maintaining Originality: AI supports but doesn't replace my critical thinking.  3️⃣ Ethical Considerations: Proper attribution, plagiarism awareness, and transparency are key. 4️⃣ Benefits: Improved efficiency and organization. No more transcribing quotes by hand, what used to take hours now takes minutes.  5️⃣ Limitations: AI can't replace human creativity or nuanced understanding.   🔍 Want to learn more? Check out my full blog post (link in the comments) for a detailed guide on ethically using AI in academic writing, including the exact prompt I use!   How are you ethically integrating AI into your academic work? Share your experiences below!   #AcademicWriting #AIEthics #ResearchTools #WritingTips"
