Introducing: Jikoni Recipe Archive, the non-profit organization revolutionizing the preservation of cuisine in Africa and its diaspora! Our mission is to celebrate the rich cuisine of Africa and its diaspora by documenting the legacy of traditional home cooking, while amplifying the evolution of its vibrant food culture. In the heart of inland Kenya lives a Maasai grandmother whose love for cooking has been passed down through generations. Agnes Kiano Kasaine, affectionately called Koko by her granddaughter and Jikoni Recipe Archive’s founder, Kiano Moju, has mastered the art of creating dishes that celebrate the simplicity of traditional Kenyan cuisine. One of her cherished recipes, Koko's Cabbage, is a true testament to the rich flavors found in minimal ingredients. By preserving recipes like Koko's Cabbage on our online recipe platform, we honor the legacy of African cuisine and ensure that these traditional flavors are not lost to time. As Black History Month comes to a close, and we are so thrilled to have collaborated with Jikoni Recipe Archive this month to launch a cooking class series to spotlight foods from the African diaspora.   This series, comprising five 24-person classes, was open to the LA community free of charge and participants got to make a diverse array of dishes from Fufu Gnocchi to Jambalaya. The classes were led by some of LA's most talented up-and-coming chefs, including Founder & CEO of Jikoni, Kiano Moju. We’re so grateful for her and the incredible team who brought this event to life! 🫶

Is food media damaging traditional African food cultures? The pursuit of virality still defines most online content, and many cultures are excluded from mainstream food media as creators self-censor for popularity. This leads to the devaluation of traditional foods and cultures, as people may begin to perceive Western viral foods as more desirable or valuable. With countries like Indonesia already taking advantage of the internet as a powerful tool for preserving local food cultures, it is imperative that Africa can do the same; oral tradition alone cannot keep these food cultures alive for future generations.
