"Elevating patients’ voices in their health care concerns, experiences and decision making"

About us

JKPPA acts as a resource to patients and their loved ones who need assistance navigating the health care system, including referral to other networks and organizations who may better assist them; JKPPA guides volunteers who are already providing assistance to their patient loved one or friend; JKPPA brings professional and consumer volunteers together with patients to assist them on a specific issue or problem and to help them to help themselves to improve their health care experience and outcomes; JKPPA establishes an allied health, legal and other professional panel of advisors, active and/or retired, to support our volunteers and patient recipients by providing remote and/or telephone guidance and advice, as needed; JKPPA positively and efficiently communicates and connects with health care providers to reduce the burden upon already overstressed health care providers.

Today I have three patients in surgery. Today one of these patients is my mom. Today I’m not just a patient advocate. Today I’m a carepartner and daughter who is trying to keep it together in a surgical waiting room, staring at the OR update board and anxiously waiting for mom’s surgeon to appear while I work with patients at two other hospitals. Today is mom’s 10th surgery. I’m so thankful I have access to mom’s patient portal & have all of her dozens of medications at my finger tips. Mom’s medications were reviewed 5 times with different members of the care team before surgery and came up with a plan to best manage mom’s severe post anesthesia nausea & vomiting. Thank goodness I have access to my patient’s portals so I can help their care partners navigate their surgeries in tandem. Their medications were also reviewed numerous times. Numerous corrections and adjustments were made in real time. Medication errors can kill someone. What happens to the patients who don’t have access to their medications for seamless review pre-op? I know what happens. I’ve seen it. I’m sick thinking about it. When mom was wheeled in, I cried. When my patients went in and their care partners called me, they cried. We forget the level of surrender patient’s families endure when a patient is wheeled into the OR. I trust my mother’s care team and my patient’s care teams. It’s still scary and overwhelming. The waiting game is our common denominator. As are the countless cups of coffee and the bags of our loved one’s belongings that couldn’t be wheeled with them to the OR. We sit and wait with our loved one’s belongings, while pushing away dark thoughts of the chance that they may not make it through surgery. Hours and hours spent waiting. I was lucky enough to find a stray chair and a bar stool chair to set up shop next to a snack machine, away from the crowded waiting room near an electrical outlet where the wi-fi worked. Money spot. Funny how much health systems spend on state-of-the-art lobbies, entrances, and over the top atriums. It’s like you’ve never waited in a surgical waiting room before. I just need a quiet place to sit, an outlet, internet access, with the promise that my loved one and patients are going to be ok. To everyone sitting in a surgical waiting room today, I see you. ❤️ #PtExp #PatientAdvocacy #Carepartner #MedicalRecords #LIVideo Adrienne Boissy Grace Vinton Mariann Yeager Bren Shipley Shannah Koss Steven Lane, MD, MPH Kristen Valdes Ryan Howells Scott Stuewe Kathryn Ayers Wickenhauser, MBA, CHPC, CHTS Micky Tripathi Victor Montori Jan Oldenburg João Bocas 🇵🇹🇬🇧🇺🇸 Pamela Landis Elizabeth Paskas DNP, MBA, RN, NE-BC, CPXP Dave deBronkart
