Religions, Gender and Development Ethics / Research Innovation & Impact / Open Access Publishing / Evidence-based Responses to Domestic Violence and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence
Our team at Project dldl/ድልድል is pleased to share a preprint of our latest community-based #research on #domestic #violence in #diverse #migrant #faith #communities in the #UK. Please note that it is a preprint, not the final peer-reviewed academic paper. We publish preprints to make the research more quickly accessible while the paper undergoes peer review. The qualitative research involved #Christians and #Muslims from #Ethiopian, #Eritrean and #Bangladeshi communities in the United Kingdom (#UK) and explored #understandings of and #attitudes towards DVA and responses that integrated #cultural and #religious #establishments and #resources in ethnic minority faith communities. The research was conducted with the help of community-based researchers, including Elsabeth Gezahegn King, Dr Aysha Ahmed and Dr Natalia Paszkiewicz, with the expert support of Professor Parveen Ali and Professor Gene Feder. The study adds to the existing evidence on #barriers that #DVA #victims from #ethnic #minority #faith #communities face in #migration #contexts, providing insight into the complex interaction between norms and pressures at #country #of #origin and #conditions in the #host #society, and the role of religious beliefs in this relationship. The study also reinforces the significant role that #religious #establishments and #mediators can play in domestic violence responses, but also their general unpreparedness to do so. Participants proposed that #integrating #religious #institutions and #resources in DVA responses would be an effective way forward. We wrote a university-level course on religions and development and it's open access for all of you to use 😊 🩷 The course consists of three modules: ▶️ Module 1 with sessions aimed at helping students better understand key issues in religion and development, including climate change, decolonisation, gender, health, and peacebuilding - all in the context of the nexus of religion and development ▶️ Module 2 focusing on research skills, to allow students to not just use but also produce research on religion and development ▶️ Module 3 allowing for practical application of the newly acquired knowledge in the form of small research projects that the students can implement with supervision The course is adaptable, so you can teach it as a 5, 10 or 15-week course as well as a 2-3-day workshop. It's based on the pedagogical principles of participation, ownership, solidarity, creativity, and flexibility. The course comes with an instructors' manual to help you prepare for the course. And all reading readings are open access and include advanced (academic) and easy (short, practice-focused) pieces. Enjoy!
🚀 We’re pleased to announce the launch of the JLI Religions & Development Research course webpage! 🌍 This platform provides key resources and training for faith actors to enhance their research in development. Very happy this publication, a scoping study on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), culture and faith in Syria and Syrian refugee communities, is now finally out. I had the pleasure of co-writing it with a team of NGO and community researchers from Syria, the UK and the US (including Mohammad Abo Hilal, Naomi Fastovsky, and Zein Al-Merhi), as part of a Joint Learning Initiative on Faith & Local Communities/مستقبل سوريا الزاهر Syria Bright Future research capacity sharing initiative I co-led with Mohammad. Thank you to Charlotte McAdams, Manal Alkourdi and Marwa Alghadban who contributed to the research, and Muhammad Alkasaby for the peer review!
New publication 🚨 The scoping study of the JLI Syria hub has been published, focusing on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (#MHPSS) in Syria and among Syrian refugee communities. It examines factors influencing MHPSS outcomes, emphasizing cultural and faith-based approaches. The study highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity in MHPSS services and the role of social support in promoting resilience. By integrating cultural and faith-based practices, mental health professionals can better address the needs of the population. This publication is a valuable resource for practitioners and researchers in the field, aiming to enhance the well-being of individuals impacted by the Syrian crisis. 🔗 Read it here: https://buff.ly/4exUSNv مستقبل سوريا الزاهر Syria Bright Future Mohammad Abo Hilal Jennifer Philippa Eggert
