Meet Gianna, a passionate enthusiast of dance and movement. After multiple knee dislocations, including a significant injury that required surgery, Gianna was diagnosed with trochlear dysplasia, an abnormality of the knee's trochlear groove which puts her at higher risk of dislocation. Gianna has faced her challenges with incredible spirit and determination, and her love for dance fuels her recovery. With every physical therapy session, she’s getting stronger and closer to returning to the stage. “I have come a long way but still have a long way to go,” Gianna shares. “I am so grateful to be under the supervision of the best team at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.” Thanks to surgeon Dr. Stephen Storer from the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Center and the dedicated [U18] Sports Medicine therapy team at Memorial Hospital Miramar, Gianna is receiving exceptional care tailored to her needs, helping her get back to pursuing her dreams. Dr. Jonathan Yarimi, Pediatric Neurologist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is a beacon of light in our healthcare system. Growing up on the Jersey Shore, he brings a unique blend of passion, humor, and expertise to his work. A die-hard football fan (#GOBIRDS), he tackles complex cases with the same fervor he cheers on his favorite team. When he’s not making a difference in the lives of his patients, Dr. Yarimi can be found at home with his wife and three amazing children, all under the age of three! With a strong “dad joke” game and a recent foray into the world of electric vehicles (while still keeping an eye on gas prices), he embodies both dedication and relatability. His subspecialty in pediatric neuroimmunology showcases his commitment to treating conditions like multiple sclerosis and autoimmune encephalitis, while his involvement in clinical research reflects his drive to advance the field. Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Yarimi's coaching background demonstrates his passion for mentorship and community involvement. Dr. Yarimi's unwavering dedication to his patients and his innovative approach to healthcare make him an invaluable asset to our healthcare system. At Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital nurses like Jessica go above and beyond every day. As the Clinical Manager of the Pediatric Emergency Department, she’s known for her compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to patient care. A dedicated member of Memorial Healthcare System since 2009, Jessica's commitment to helping others is deeply personal. After witnessing her younger sister's battle with breast cancer, she was driven to make a difference. Jessica's opportunity came when she learned that her colleague at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, Wendy, had a husband who had been waiting for a kidney transplant for two years. Moved by Wendy's situation, Jessica decided to become a living kidney donor through the Memorial Transplant Institute, under the guidance of Dr. Heather LaGuardia, Medical Director of the Living Donor Program, Dr. Basit Javid, Chief, Abdominal Transplant Medicine and Dr. Linda Chen, Surgical Director of the Living Donor & Pediatric Transplant Program. Because Jessica was not a direct match for Wendy's husband, Kevin, she started the process of a "swap" living donor program with National Kidney Registry, which means that her kidney will go to someone else on the list, and Kevin will receive the next eligible match! This is a unique opportunity for both adults and children, offering life-saving transplants across generations and helping families when it matters most. Jessica’s story is a testament to the power of selflessness and collaboration in healthcare. While she continues to lead in the Emergency Department, her act of kindness now serves as an inspiration for others to consider the gift of organ donation. What is an EKG? Electrocardiograms (EKGs) are a simple, painless test that can detect signs of conditions linked to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Though not mandatory, many organizations have begun including EKGs in physicals required for their athletes. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Who We Play For, and the Florida Jr. Panthers partnered to bring EKG screenings to the Florida Jr. Panthers players. Together, the team screened over 80 athletes in an effort to identify abnormal heart rhythms or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. “EKGs don’t catch everything, and a normal EKG doesn’t necessarily mean your child will never have a heart problem, but EKGs can go a long way toward keeping kids safe”, Dr. Melissa Diamond, pediatric cardiologist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital said.
