🇲🇽 Shifting Gears: The Impact of Trump’s 25% Auto Tariff on Mexico President Trump has announced a 25% tariff on imported automobiles and certain auto parts, citing national security concerns. However, vehicles assembled in Mexico with U.S.-made content will see a reduced effective tariff, as the duty applies only to non-U.S. content. With Mexico exporting 2.9 million vehicles to the U.S. last year—accounting for over $181 billion in trade—this move is expected to significantly affect the Mexican auto industry. Critics argue the tariff violates the USMCA agreement, disrupts North American supply chains, and could add an average of $6,000 to the price of vehicles built in Mexico and Canada. The Mexican government is seeking negotiations to mitigate the economic impact, while analysts warn of broader consequences for both nations' economies. 📦 Big Changes Coming to LTL Shipping Costs! The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system is set for a major overhaul in July, reshaping how Less-than-Truckload (LTL) shipping rates are determined. The update prioritizes density, meaning lighter shipments will see cost increases, while heavier shipments may become more affordable. Shipments under 4 pounds per cubic foot will experience the biggest rate hikes, whereas those over 8 pounds per cubic foot could see cost reductions. Shipments between 6 and 8 pounds per cubic foot are expected to remain at current rates. Shippers should verify weight and dimensions carefully and consult carriers or third-party logistics providers to assess the impact on their operations. Continue below to the full article by Colin Campbell for Supply Chain Dive. At John S. James Co. we understand the complexities of shifting freight classifications. Our team works closely with LTL carriers and shippers to optimize shipping strategies, ensure accurate freight classifications, and control costs. 🚛 Trade Uncertainty: Could Tariffs Push Mexico into Recession? A new OECD report warns that escalating tariffs could drive Mexico into a 1.3% GDP contraction by 2025, a sharp downgrade from previous growth forecasts. With the April 2 tariff deadline looming, the potential 25% duties on Canadian and Mexican imports could disrupt trade flows and weaken economic confidence. The Laredo port of entry, the top gateway for U.S.-Mexico trade, saw an 11% year-over-year trade increase in January, but trucking volumes remain lower than in 2022 and 2023. As trade uncertainty grows, businesses must stay ahead of policy shifts that impact cross-border operations. Continue below to the full article by Noi Mahoney for FreightWaves. 💡 What is OECD? While food prices remained stable, core import prices—excluding fuel and food—also climbed 0.4%, reflecting the impact of past dollar strength. The Federal Reserve is expected to hold interest rates steady as it monitors inflation trends. Continue below to the full article by Lucia Mutikani for Reuters. At John S.
