I spoke with Maiya Focht about the long-term weight loss effects of semaglutide in obesity without diabetes in the SELECT trial (study here: https://t.co/XGmvk3YnOg). Here’s what I’m taking away: 💡 It showed cardiovascular benefits even in those who did not lose weight. Another signal of the possible benefits of GLP1s beyond weight loss. 💡 Sustained weight loss is possible, despite the body’s natural desire to regain the weight – it’s the longest study we’ve seen of semaglutide for weight loss and participants maintained it over four years. 💡 We must continue to think beyond the scale – weight loss as “low” as 5% can still lead to overall health benefits. 💡 Diet and exercise alone simply isn’t enough for many to achieve health. “Why haven’t I lost 20% of my body weight yet?” Patients haven’t been set up for success when it comes to managing expectations of medicated weight loss results, and we need to talk about it. I spoke with Cassidy Morrison about the “Ozempic non-responders” trend and here’s what I want you to know: 🛑 As a society, we must stop focusing on short-term, drastic weight loss as the ultimate goal. Instead, let’s shift our focus to improving other biomarkers of health (lower blood pressure, less back pain) and to achieving sustainable results over time. 💊 Not all medications are right for everyone. If you aren’t responding to GLP-1s, it might be because the medication isn’t actually tackling the root cause of your weight gain. Effective medication-assisted weight loss should not rely on one class of medications alone. 💡 If you aren’t seeing the results you’d expected, talk to a specialist. Building a relationship with a trusted provider allows you to gut-check whether you’re on track with where you should be (even if you think you aren’t), or pivot course if you’re truly not progressing.
