🚨The deadline for our next Functional Genomics call is Jan. 30, 2025.🚨 More at https://lnkd.in/eWyWJ4WN Below, hear from JGI user Tae Seok Moon of the J. Craig Venter Institute on his experiences working with the JGI's DNA Synthesis Program. Proposals for our Functional Genomics call should focus on projects that translate genomic information into biological function, and leverage our DNA synthesis & omics capabilities to enhance understanding of gene and genome function — particularly those not readily achievable without the capabilities and expertise available at the JGI. #BioEGSB's Trent Northen is leading the conversation to develop community standards for researching synthetic communities (#SynComs) in plant–microbiota. Synthetic communities are increasingly being used, yet, the lack of community standards limits the efficiency and progress in this important area of research. In 2024, the DOE Joint Genome Institute and Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University piloted an internship program enabled by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) RENEW initiative — which provides the next-generation workforce with hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship at DOE national laboratories and user facilities. This brought A&M students to the JGI to work on groundbreaking science. Undergraduate student Ti'Yanna Watson and graduate student LaMonika Dent worked with JGI mentors Yi Zhai and John Vogel on researching the effects of Brachypodium distachyon plant root exudates on the plant microbiome. Students also participated in workshops, hackathons and networking events. Planning to attend the upcoming #2024NDiSTEM conference in Phoenix? Don't miss the Nov. 2 "Getting Credit for Scientific Contributions of Any Size" panel discussion we're organizing with the DOE Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase). Panelists include Ellen G Dow, PhD, Stephen Mondo, TBK Reddy, Ph.D and Rhondene Wint, PhD. https://lnkd.in/gw2vdadz, Nov 02, 2024 #professionaldevelopment

By "adopting" genomes from the JGI that have been sequenced but not published, students conduct research & analysis—and ultimately publish first-author papers. To learn more, we spoke to Matthew Escobar of California State University San Marcos, as well as Kalyani Maitra of California State University, Fresno and her former students Angela Soghomonian and Mark Soghomonian (also siblings!) in the latest episode of #GenomeInsider: jointgeno.me/s05e05 Berkeley Lab Biosciences Area at Berkeley Lab U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science The Society for Science at User Research Facilities

Congratulations to Nobelist David Baker of the University of Washington! https://lnkd.in/ep_D9ntP As a JGI user, he worked with us to generate structural models for protein families that had previously had no structural information, available in Science: https://lnkd.in/eK2VtDQh Building on that work, he co-authored a functional dark matter paper in Nature led by Nikos Kyrpides. That work was made possible through the JGI’s IMG/M database and National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC): https://lnkd.in/grVxrjNr

Congratulations to the JGI's Yumary Vasquez for placing second place in last week's Bay Area SLAM event. Yumary spoke about going "viral" in a BIG way — specifically how infections from giant viruses can impact our water, air, soil, even the gut microbiome! Yumary will go on to compete in the National Lab Research SLAM event in Washington D.C. She previously placed first place in the Berkeley Lab SLAM. Thrilled to be one of the awardees of JGI's 2025 Community Science Program! This will help my lab branch into new areas of genetic tool development and metabolic engineering in lignocellulosic thermophiles 🧬🦠🔬. Looking forward to the collaboration and discoveries ahead! #Biotechnology #SyntheticBiology #MicrobialEngineering #Bioenergy
Congrats to the scientists selected for our 2025 Community Science Program Annual Call! ➡ https://lnkd.in/ebVJcBD3 “We are very excited to see the outcome of the innovative research being proposed by this year’s CSP investigators,” said Tanja Woyke, Deputy Director of the JGI’s User Programs. “Many of these projects are large in scale and involve multiple collaborators, bringing together diverse expertise to address complex scientific questions.” These projects include cutting-edge research into microbial communities — from freshwater estuaries reshaped by dam removal to Antarctica's photosynthetic mats — to reveal how these systems adapt and contribute to global biogeochemical cycles. Additional efforts in metabolic engineering and biocatalyst design will target sustainable energy solutions, focusing on lignocellulosic thermophiles and polymer degradation. See the full list of recipients below, and learn more about our proposal calls at jointgeno.me/proposals. The deadline for our New Investigator call is coming up Oct. 4! jointgeno.me/CSPnewPI.
