The newest episode of JGI's Genome Insider Podcast is out: Joint BioEnergy Institute's Kasey Markel and Patrick Shih are looking for new ways to engineer plants. So they’ve looked into wasps that program oak trees to raise their young in structures called galls. In this episode, hear from Kasey and Patrick about how this project unfolded, and how they worked with the Joint Genome Institute's #metabolomics program to find out more about these weird little pods. https://lnkd.in/gJhDXGVZ

"Attending a week of lectures and discussions by Nobel Laureates on topics ranging from attosecond pulses to exoplanet science was an experience I am honored to have had,” said Margaret Doyle, a graduate student in #BioMBIB and one of 27 young scientists selected to represent the University of California as a UC President Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting Fellow at the recent gathering in Germany. Margaret is a member of the Vittal Yachandra / Junko Yano / Jan Kern (YYK) group. Read more on Doyle's experience: https://lnkd.in/gKs8jGj3

#BioMBIB researchers conducted the first ever structural analysis of a key protein involved in DNA damage repair and cancer. While the narrative around cancer chemotherapy has historically focused on DNA damage repair pathways, findings from this study underscore the role of RNA-mediated processes on chemotherapy response, which could have major implications for cancer treatment outcomes. The Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) is collaborating with Mango Materials on their project to convert methane into biodegradable polymers that can replace carbon-intensive plastics using methane-eating bacteria. #ABPDU helped Mango optimize their process and test out industrial-scale relevant equipment before investing in their own pilot scale systems. https://lnkd.in/gxJk-pzB

“This project is designed to benefit a region that has massive potential but has so far been economically left behind, and to develop a new industry that can provide improvements in air quality, water quality, and greenhouse gas emissions as well as significant opportunities in economic equity and the creation of new jobs.” Blake Simmons, #BioBSE Division Director and the BioCircular Valley project lead, a new group investigating how to make better use of the diverse agricultural waste in California’s Northern San Joaquin Valley. Schmidt Sciences' Virtual Institute on Feedstocks of the Future has awarded new funding to the group.
