  • During the last week, the NJMR team had the pleasure of announcing the winner of the 2022-2024 Best Article Award at the 2024 Nordic Migration Research Conference in Bergen. It has become increasingly difficult to select one single article, which we attribute to the increasing quality of submissions to the journal - a difficulty we are of course quite happy to be faced with! Therefore, this year, we also selected two "honorable mentions" in addition to the Best Article award. Best Article - Katrine Syppli Kohl, The Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen "Disturbing Intimacies: The Pathopolitical Governance of Mixed-Status Families in Times of Return" https://lnkd.in/dD-ffqj7 This impactful article offers a nuanced and incisive exploration of the harrowing experiences of undocumented migrants in Denmark. Through masterful analysis of key concepts like deportability and in/visibility, the author brilliantly illuminates the cruel "border spectacle" that tears families apart in the name of immigration enforcement. The introduction of the powerful new framework of "pathopolitics" is a revelatory contribution, enabling a profound understanding of the immense human costs of these policies. Combining meticulous research with profound empathy, this is a vital and deeply moving work that shines an essential light on a pressing humanitarian crisis. An exemplary scholarly achievement. Honorable Mention - Jón Ingvar Kjaran and Brynja E. Halldórsdóttir, University of Iceland "Epistemic Violence Toward Immigrant Women in Iceland: Silencing, Smothering, and Linguistic Deficit" https://lnkd.in/dafuF_Eg This paper offers a vital examination of how the Icelandic #metoo movement has exposed the systemic silencing and epistemic violence faced by immigrant women. The authors powerfully illuminate how Icelandic norms perpetuate the marginalization of these women's voices, highlighting the urgent need for greater recognition of hegemonic practices. A remarkable scholarly achievement poised to advance equity and inclusion. Honorable Mention - Ameera Masoud, Tuuli Kurki, Kristiina Brunila, and Gunilla Holm, University of Helsinki "Racialised Integration: Arabic-Speaking Refugees and Immigrants’ Experiences on the Paradoxes of Integration" https://lnkd.in/dYmRn-mE This paper offers an incisive critique, masterfully uncovering how Finland's integration policies, despite their rhetoric of equality, perpetuate racialization and inequality for Arabic-speaking refugees and immigrants. The authors' robust and insightful analysis powerfully challenges prevailing narratives, making a remarkable scholarly contribution that deepens our understanding of the complex realities underlying integration policies.
