Once upon a time, Jeffrey A. Chandler, PhD, James J. Chrisman (https://lnkd.in/gJHx3NCr), Josh Daspit, and Oleg Petrenko and I came together to write a cool literature review article published in the Journal of Small Business Management! A month or so ago, Antje Fiedler invited us to discuss the findings of our literature review on family CEOs. What a cool experience. We would like to thank the leadership of the Journal of Small Business Management, including Eric Liguori, Christina Theodoraki (and others), for giving us a chance to discuss what we found. We hope the paper will help future scholars. This short interview is a summary of the findings! Please let me know if you cannot access the paper, and I will send it. P. S. It is on Research Gate, just FYI.

We need more research on acquihires; they are small but important exit routes for founders and new venture teams. With an overall slowdown in the VC world, acqui-hiring is back in the news: https://lnkd.in/gURhecuq This inorganic growth route may be especially relevant to SMEs, as we suggest in our Journal of Small Business Management paper: Gala, K., & Mueller, B. A. (2024). Acquihires by SMEs as a strategic response to industry digitalization. Journal of Small Business Management, 62(3), 1430-1468. Ping me for a copy of the paper!

Just Released: Mitigating the impact of late internationalization of emerging market SMEs: A dynamic capability perspective by Marina Dabić, Sandeep Yadav, Nicolas Huck, Jane Haley, and Timothy Kiessling. https://lnkd.in/e6wVUAEx Abstract: In this study, we investigate the impact of internationalization timing on the export performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets. Our theoretical foci are the learning advantage of newness theory and the dynamic capability perspective to focus on how late internationalization can adversely affect export performance. Our findings suggest that the dynamic capabilities and industry experience of the SME Manager can mitigate these adverse effects. The time since initial international entry and an informal approach during export commencement exacerbate them. This conclusion is based on examining a substantial dataset, encompassing 8,278 SMEs from 84 emerging economies, collected over 14 years (2006–2020). This study uncovers novel insights into the intricate dynamics of SME internationalization and its influence on export performance.
