Please enjoy this message from our new President and CEO Julie Morita: Good morning, colleagues, I am thrilled to start an exciting new journey today as President and CEO of The Joyce Foundation. Since the announcement in July, I have been overwhelmed with gratitude from your letters, calls, and emails with warm, heartfelt wishes as well as the hugs, handshakes, and other congratulatory expressions. I’m humbled by and appreciate your graciousness. I look forward to sharing more with all of you about the next chapter at Joyce. But for now, I believe that my most important immediate duty—and the one I’m most excited about—is spending time becoming better acquainted with our programming and staff. Deepening my understanding of and appreciation for our work and how well we are executing our mission is my highest priority. Our relationships and partnerships with philanthropy peers, grantees, and other partners are paramount. I look forward to engaging with you, meeting new partners, and reconnecting with old friends, in the near future. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out and say hello! I want to thank my predecessor, Ellen Alberding, for her warm welcome and commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for our team. Thank you, Ellen. My enthusiasm for my new role is tempered only by the deep responsibility and privilege I feel in leading this organization and working with the Joyce team to carry forward our legacy and impact in Chicago and throughout the Great Lakes region. With Gratitude, Julie #Leadership #PresidentAndCEO #JulieMorita #ShesGotNext https://lnkd.in/g2NvZMhH

We were a proud sponsor and had a wonderful time recently at “Philanthropy Forward ‘24” hosted by Philanthropy Ohio. Democracy Program Director Carrie Davis participated in a panel on strengthening democracy in Ohio communities, and we enjoyed time connecting with many of our grantees, including Ohio Voter Rights Coalition, League of Women Voters of Ohio, Common Cause Ohio, and Ohio Voice. Congratulations to Philanthropy Ohio for an incredible convening rooted in equipping Ohio philanthropy to be effective partners for change in our communities. #Philanthropy #Ohio #GreatLakesRegion #Democracy #FairElections

We are thrilled about the news that Dr. Amy Loyd, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education, has been named as the new CEO of All4Ed. The Joyce Foundation has worked with Amy over several years, and in 2023, Amy and other U.S. Department of Education colleagues visited Chicago for a site visit on the Chicago Roadmap partnership that Joyce organized (chicagoroadmap.org). We look forward to our continued partnership with Amy as she takes the helm at All4Ed, a current grantee in Joyce’s College and Career Readiness portfolio. Congratulations to Amy L. and All4Ed!

We had a wonderful time at the Ragan Communications and PR Daily Nonprofit Communications Awards last week at The Yale Club of New York City. Our #LunchAndLearn Gun Violence Prevention Webinar Series was nominated for “Best Advocacy or Awareness Campaign.” We did not win but considering the very stiff competition we really are honored to have been nominated. Congratulations to Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition who won the category for its “Hey Mama” campaign focusing on Black maternal health. Our team members Ala Alkhatib, Claire Freckmann & Sabrina Miller (who nominated us) enjoyed being with so many of our colleagues nationwide, seeing their outstanding projects and sharing more about Joyce’s mission and programs. Kudos again to our Gun Violence Prevention and Justice Reform team which includes Claire, Louisa Aviles, Dr. Quintin Williams & Program Director Timothy Daly for executing this monthly series that has grown to become a trusted resource among researchers, policy makers and other key stakeholders. Thanks to Diane Schwartz and the entire Ragan & PR Daily team for uplifting the transformative storytelling by our colleagues worldwide that is changing hearts, minds and lives. We’ll see you next year! #Communications #Nonprofits #Philanthropy #Storytelling #Diversity #AwardsPrograms #GunViolencePrevention

The September Crain's Forum in Crain's Chicago Business, Crain's Cleveland Business & Crain's Detroit Business is focused on public safety in these Great Lakes region cities. Data shows that crime is down throughout the region yet scores of residents still report feeling unsafe. New research from Joyce uncovered that we aren’t solving more gun homicides because a third of law enforcement agencies statewide are not fully using federal tracking tools that help solve gun crimes. Our Gun Violence Prevention and Justice Reform Program Director Timothy Daly offers why this can and must change in the op-ed below. "Gun violence is hard enough to solve in this country as it is. If there are tools available to law enforcement to do something about it, we need to do everything we can to ensure they’re being used. Completely and effectively." #MustRead #PublicSafety #PublicAffairs #GunViolencePrevention https://lnkd.in/gcCU-jkT

An estimated 40 million members of "Gen Z" (18-27) will be eligible to vote in November, with 8 million newly eligible youth (18-19) aging into the electorate since the 2022 midterm election. Voter engagement among this group is more important than ever. Two Joyce Grantees, the Institute of Politics at University of Chicago and the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition teamed up to host Youth Vote Fest, a unique opportunity to engage nearly 400 young voters at the two major political parties’ conventions this summer, the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee and the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago. Read more about this exciting, one-of-a-kind experience in the latest installment of "Democracy Desk" from Democracy Program Director Carrie Davis & Program Officer Melanie McElroy. #Democracy #YouthVote #GenZ #Election2024 https://lnkd.in/gDWctD4q

Michigan and other states in the Great Lakes region and nationwide are facing a gun violence crisis in part because we’re facing a clearance rate crisis. Less than half of all gun homicides are solved by police, which erodes police-community trust, makes it harder for police to solicit community cooperation in shooting investigations and perpetuates a vicious cycle of violence. New research (linked in comments) led by our Gun Violence Prevention and Justice Reform Program Director Timothy Daly uncovered that more than half of police departments nationwide, including those in Michigan, aren't fully using primary federal tools that help solve gun crimes and save lives. Learn more about our research and how we can help solve this problem in Tim's Detroit Free Press op-ed with Kathleen O'Toole. #PublicSafety #PublicPolicy #Policing #GunViolencePrevention #Michigan #GreatLakes https://lnkd.in/gqbct_mx
