Inspiring and preparing young people to succeed
About us
Junior Achievement (JA) is America’s largest and fastest growing non-profit organization dedicated to financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship education. Today, JA realizes its vision and purpose - to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy - through use of sequential and integrated kindergarten through high school programs. In partnership with businesses and educators, JA brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential. The business, economics and life-skill focused programs help students understand the relationship between what they learn in school and their successful participation in our economy. JA’s curriculum is taught by classroom volunteers, who are recruited from leading corporate and community organizations and enhance the lessons with their real-life experiences and professional expertise. These passionate business employees and local leaders are individuals who care enough to make a difference in a child’s life by taking their work to kids. Junior Achievement of Southwest New England's origins date back to 1951, with the creation of a Hartford-based JA organization. Today, JASWNE serves students in seven Connecticut counties (all but Fairfield County). For the current school year, JA expects to reach 47,000 students with more than 2,900 volunteers sharing their talents and business experience in the classroom.

#TurnbackTuesday! In March, Junior Achievement of Southwest New England celebrated our inaugural Stock Market Challenge! Equipped with lessons from JA curriculum, student teams competed for the largest portfolio by investing and trading in a volatile market simulation. We know that real EXPERIENCE with financial literacy sets students up to OWN their economic success, and we can’t wait to bring this fast-paced (and incredibly fun!) simulation to more of Connecticut’s students next school year. Get your students on the top of our list for our next Stock Market Challenge (coming this November!!) by contacting Susan W. at swagemaker@jaconn.org. Visit jaconn.org for more.

On this #TurnbackTuesday, we’re looking back at the final session of our 2024 Entrepreneurial Academies! Student teams presented their last board reports, finalized liquidation of their companies, and had a celebration of all their learning and success. Every student experienced tremendous growth and leadership development over the 15 weeks of this program! We are so grateful to our volunteers from The Hartford (special thanks to Karmela Malone and Trevon Canada!), Pratt & Whitney (special thanks to Kelly Y.!), and Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. (special thanks to Donald Allan Jr. and Joseph Radziewicz!), as well as our incredible site teachers Michael Rota & Geri DeRosa. And of course, thank you to JA's Aimee Heckman for your incredible work! We are so proud of what our Entrepreneurial Academies accomplished this school year, and we can’t wait for the next! #ja #jaswne #juniorachievement #innovation #entrepreneurs #entrepreneurship #volunteership #connecticut #education
