It's FOIA Fact Friday! Q: Why did the National Security Administration offer to let reporters interview fictional cartoon characters? A: It was part of the press rollout of the NSA-sponsored children’s coloring book “CryptoKids.” CryptoKids featured sleuthing animals like Cyber Cat and Decipher Dog. According to public records obtained by Vice’s Jason Koebler, the objectives of the CryptoKids project included “inspiring future generations of code makers and code breakers.” And yes... A press release invited publications like Boy’s Life and Highlights to “interview” the fictional characters. It's unclear whether anyone took them up on the offer. It's FOIA Fact Friday! Q: How often do agencies charge a fee for a public records request? A: Less than 20% of the time. According to MuckRock, over 80% of the requests filed through their platform are “simple requests” that are completed in 20 days or less, so agencies don’t typically require a fee.
