📊 NEW STUDY 👉 Toward Better Aging: A National Study of Korean American Older Adults https://lnkd.in/eK93fFEU The population of Korean older adults 65 years of age and over has jumped nearly 70% from 2011 to 2021. However, they continue to be sidelined in aging research and policymaking, and their unique cultural, language, and healthcare needs are overlooked. In a study commissioned by Korean American Community Foundation, AAF partnered with seven Korean-serving nonprofits across the country to identify these challenges and gain insights into their daily life experiences and needs. For this landmark report, we surveyed 819 Korean older adults and interviewed 63 individuals in New York City, New Jersey, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Washington D.C. Some of our most urgent findings: 🔸 6 in 10 Korean older adults do not have enough money to afford basic necessities like rent, food, and healthcare. 🔸 Nearly 2 in 5 Korean older adults are living in or near poverty. 🔸 73% of Korean Americans older than 65 have limited English proficiency. 🔸 There is an extreme scarcity of affordable housing units that can support the language and cultural needs of Korean older adults. 🔸 In the absence of convenient public transit, the majority of Korean older adults preferred to drive despite concerns about the risks behind the wheel. These findings are a crucial step toward bridging funding and policy gaps and strengthening our infrastructures of support for Korean American older adults.
