Providing Compassionate Grief Support for Our Community
About us
As a nonprofit organization serving the San Francisco Bay Area since 1976, Kara provides comprehensive grief support, crisis response and education to individuals and communities facing the difficult realities of death and dying. Serving over 5,000 individuals annually, Kara’s mission is to provide grief support for children, teens, families and adults. Our vision is to see people of all ages compassionately supported on their journey through grief so they can move toward renewed hope and meaning. Our agency name conveys a real connection between care and grief. In his book, Out of Solitude, Henry Nouwen wrote: Real care is not ambiguous. Real care excludes indifference and is the opposite of apathy. The word "care" finds its roots in the gothic "Kara" which means lament. Our services are provided primarily by over 100 trained volunteers who have experience in healing from personal loss. With the aid of professional staff and ongoing training, Kara's volunteers facilitate others' journeys during life-threatening illness and bereavement. We are supported primarily by tax-deductible donations from individuals, corporations and foundations.

Grief Awareness Day is just a week away— does your company have a plan in place? Building a culture of care at your organization means showing up for your employees during life's most challenging moments. One of those critical moments is the loss of a loved one. Talking about grief can be hard, especially at work. Grieving employees may struggle to share how they feel or what they need. Although grief is a universal experience, we all grapple with knowing what to say and what to avoid. Recognizing Grief Awareness Day supports ongoing efforts to care for bereaved employees, combat grief illiteracy in the workplace, and foster a compassionate culture. Not sure how to recognize the day at your organization? DM us for a plan.

The Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model local report prepared by Judi's House/JAG Institute for Kara projects that nearly 200,000 youth will be bereaved due to the death of a parent or sibling by the time they reach age 25. The New York Life Foundation’s 2024 State of Grief Report (read on the link below) demonstrates that with the number of youth experiencing the death of a parent of sibling before the age of 18 on the rise, it is critical now more than ever to understand and strengthen how bereaved youth will receive support. You can make a difference in the life of a grieving child, teen, or young adult today by donating to our Summer Giving campaign at: https://lnkd.in/g_hus5CM
