Last week we announced the that Program on Healthcare Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management will begin offering a new certificate on the Business of Healthcare. This certficiate is based on our long standing expertise teaching about this complicated ecosystem to a variety of audiences. To help expain our perspecitve on these issues, the amazing team at Kellogg Insight put together a truly wonderful 5 part podcast on the U.S. healthcare system. I was pleased to take part in this series and will be featuring these episodes over the next few weeks as we start classes and launch our new certificate. How do algorithms keep workers under control? In an excerpt from the book Inside the Invisible Cage: How Algorithms Control Workers, author and Kellogg professor Hatim A. Rahman describes how algorithms are used to evaluate workers’ performance. This often happens with little transparency, leaving workers guessing how they are being rated. The opaque nature of the algorithmic rating systems used by platforms such as TalentFinder—and the increasing reliance on them by companies hiring workers—enable platforms to control high-skilled workers within an “invisible cage”: an environment in which organizations embed rules and guidelines for how workers should behave in algorithms that shift without providing no­tice, explanation, or recourse for workers. How do #stereotypes lurk in our language? Scholarly investigations of bias have expanded to examine not just a single sociodemographic group on its own, but the interaction of several, intersecting groups together (e.g., defined by gender and race simultaneously). “It’s important to understand how to study this intersectionality at scale,” suggests Kellogg assistant professor of management and organizations Tessa Charlesworth. And a new tool co-developed by Charlesworth can do just this. Using the novel Flexible Intersectional Stereotype Extraction procedure, or FISE, Charlesworth analyzed 840 billion words of text to unearth biases surrounding different intersectional groupings of people. Initial analysis found that historically powerful groups dominate in terms of how frequently they are discussed. And this research can be helpful amidst the rise of generative AI. Last night, Oprah Winfrey took center stage at the Democratic National Convention to endorse Presidential nominee Kamala Harris. But just how much of an impact can an endorsement from Oprah have on a candidate's campaign? In 2012, research coauthored by Kellogg's Craig Garthwaite tried to establish the correlation between celebrity endorsements and votes. The researchers were able to conclude that Winfrey’s endorsement was worth about a million votes for Obama, who beat his main primary challenger, Hillary Clinton, by about 270,000 votes in the states used in the sample.
