⭐Democracy Fellow Spotlight⭐ Keseb Democracy Fellow Farbod Faraji of Protect Democracy recently co-authored a Just Security article with Jennifer Dresden on how a system of proportional representation in American politics could reduce political violence across the country. 💭“A wholesale change in the electoral system—away from the current two-party system to proportional representation—could greatly reduce the long-term risks of political violence.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKf2mqnc #democracy #democracychampion #unitedstates

Our fourth and final conversation on invigorating and expanding civic power will take place on October 24th at 11 AM EST (12 PM BRT/ 5 PM SAST). In a conversation moderated by Koketso Moeti from amandla.mobi, Tessa Dooms from Rivonia Circle, Julian Walker from PushBlack, and Áurea Carolina and Lucas Louback from NOSSAS will discuss three approaches for unlocking people’s civic agency to engage in individual and collective action: setting the political agenda through people’s power, rebuilding democracy through local institutions, and democratizing power to affect change. ⭐Democracy Fellow Spotlight⭐ Last month, Keseb Democracy Fellow Tshepo Fokane of Alliance for Rural Democracy participated in a webinar with Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), where participants discussed rural and urban land reform. A Food For Mzansi article recently highlighted the webinar. “I think some of the key challenges have been a failure, a shortcoming, and a fear from the state to actually tackle this (issue of tenure land reform) head on. Tenure reform could be done in bite size pieces, but it must be done. And that hasn’t happened to date. What you actually find is a lot of practices, which are not the same as customs and traditions, which continue to repress rural women,” Tshepo shared. 📝Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gQigXAs4 📽️Watch the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/g63CP9PX #democracy #democracychampions #southafrica

🌍 It is important for “the pro-democracy coalition to set aside their differences and act together to prevent authoritarians from trying to fracture that coalition… that is what authoritarians can often try to do best through divide and conquer strategies.” ✨Earlier this month, Keseb hosted a virtual panel discussion with Lara Flint, Farbod Faraji, and Flávia Pellegrino on the topic of ensuring free, fair, and trusted elections. The panelists discussed effective strategies to contain, counter, and sustainably prevent the re-election of authoritarian leaders. Flávia and Farbod highlighted the need to leverage short, medium, and long-term strategies including building broad-based, responsive coalitions, driving structural reform, and holding anti-democratic actors accountable. 📽️Watch the video in English here: https://lnkd.in/estDa-S5 📽️Watch the video with Portuguese interpretation here: https://lnkd.in/emVmbBvA If you are interested in more discussions on strategies for 21st-century democracy, there is still time to register for two virtual events taking place this month on the topics of grassroots strategies to combat election-related misinformation and invigorating and expanding civic power. ⭐Democracy Fellow Spotlight⭐ Keseb Democracy Fellow Tessa Dooms of Rivonia Circle recently participated in an interview with The Voice of the Cape, where she commented on South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU). “We have no sense of what we are measuring the GNU against in terms of its plan and plan of action. Normally political parties make their manifesto known and through that we can hold them to account and ensure that they deliver on what they promised those voting for them, but this is not the case with the GNU,” Tessa shared.
