What is authoritarianism, and why is it a threat to democracy? Authoritarianism happens when a leader or group takes too much power and tries to control society without checks or balances. This is dangerous because it weakens democracy, silences voices, and undermines rights. There are many ways authoritarianism can creep in, but they are easy to identify once you know what you're looking for. Ask yourself: 🤔 Is this leader downplaying or staying silent about anti-democratic actions? 🤔 Are extremists being tolerated—or worse—supported? 🤔 Why are leaders refusing to cooperate with others, even when democracy is at risk? It's important to remember: DEMOCRACY CAN STILL BE SAVED! By recognizing authoritarian actions, we can better protect the freedoms we all value. Art has the power to ignite change! Shepard Fairey has brought his iconic wheatpaste murals to Dayton, infusing our city with vibrant messages that connect democracy, art, and community. 🗳️🎨 As part of our Democracy and the Arts initiative, these murals remind us of our collective strength and the importance of engaging in civic life. Dayton has a rich legacy of using art to advance democratic ideals, from its early industrial innovations to its ongoing cultural renaissance. The city has long been a hub for creative expression, empowering voices across our community. Today, Shepard Fairey’s murals carry on the legacy, urging us to remember that every voice matters, and every vote counts. Special thanks to our partners ArtWorks Cincinnati, ArtsVote Ohio, and Art Makes Columbus for making this project possible across Ohio!

Wonder what it takes to strengthen a democratic society? Swipe for signs of a healthy democracy! For a democracy to thrive, politicians and political parties must take key actions to protect its integrity. Here’s what healthy democracies require: 1️⃣ Accepting the results of free and fair elections, win or lose. 2️⃣ Rejecting political violence. 3️⃣ Refusing to cooperate with violent or anti-democratic forces. Leaders committed to democracy should also: 4️⃣ Condemn anti-democratic behavior—even within their own party. 5️⃣ Refuse to nominate or support extremists. 6️⃣ Work with pro-democracy leaders from all sides to isolate extremists. These principles keep democracy strong and vibrant. Let’s hold our leaders to these standards. Watch our full webinar for more insights and check the comments below to keep the conversation going! #ProtectDemocracy #DemocracyAroundTheGlobe #KetteringFoundation
