Explore the world. Invent the future.

About us

KID Museum is our region’s pioneering experiential museum and educational makerspace. We foster the “Mind of a Maker” in kids and youth, empowering the next generation with the skills to invent the future. We see the world as full of promise, potential, and possibility. We envision a bold future where there are pathways for every young person to engage in the hands-on, transformational learning and exploration that unlocks new opportunities. We work everyday to make this vision a reality. With a focus on engaging populations that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM, our programs build economic opportunity and help diversify the talent pipeline of the future.

KID Museum and Identity, Inc. today announced an innovative effort to improve STEM literacy among Latino 2nd and 3rd graders in Montgomery County, Maryland. The timing could not be more critical. Latino youth now make up 35% of Montgomery County Public Schools, and according to data from the Maryland State Department of Education, only 23.1% of K-5th grade Latino students were proficient in math in SY22-23. This impact carries through higher education and careers. Less than 3% of Latino students are enrolling in advanced STEM courses in high school and only 8% of the STEM workforce is Latino. To help reverse this troubling trend, KID Museum is building on a model it has tested across years of direct service to schools and students to create a culturally responsive curriculum and training tools that will allow youth development workers to bring high-quality, hands-on STEM learning to their students.  Identity’s trained staff will deliver the program in their established elementary out-of-school time program and complement the student curriculum with an aligned parent engagement program that builds understanding of STEM pathways and provides home-based STEM enrichment activities. Made possible through the support and advocacy of Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, this pilot program will build confidence and skills in STEM subjects during what we know is a critical inflection point in a student’s education - the elementary years. We can't wait to unveil the work of KID Museum visiting artist Jenna Frye on October 13. Her expansive installation, inspired by Truchet tiles, will be on display through the fall. As a maker and educator who looks to art, design, and engineering to help solve problems, Jenna embodies the very essence of KID. And some lucky students and visitors had a chance to learn from Jenna and contribute to her art this summer during our summer camps and Sunday museum hours. Come see the stunning result of all of her work on October 13. Tickets and more information are here: https://lnkd.in/er8yguQQ

KID Museum had a blast with the families at Boeing Family Day! Most kids have made spin art, but these makers used a circuit block to create the motor that made their spin art go! Our educators also helped Boeing employees and their families build instruments using cardboard and conductive materials to create the instrument's buttons. Using basic programming in Scratch, the kids then brought their instruments to life by connecting each button to a different sound. Boeing's support for KID Museum helps bring STEM programming and hands-on learning opportunities to schools and students with financial need.
